Show Mall is classroom for education fair Students from the Alpine School District could be seen at "The Mall" Friday and Saturday -- and no, they weren't "stuffing" school. Instead the more than 3,000 boys and girls who spent time at University Mall during the two-days were there to give the public a birdseye view of what goes on in their classrooms on other days of the year. The occasion was the school district's annual Education Fair -an event begun five years ago to heighten public awareness of the community school program and has since expanded to include activities and programs from nearly every school in the district. "We increased the fair three times this year," said Jennie Barber, a community education manager in the district, making the fair bigger and better than ever before. Activities included everything from a classroom model with teachers demonstrating their teaching techniques to booths, displays and performances. Student projects were displayed in or area of the mail Indudil art, sculpture, animal models, medieval castles a r-'""n vV'. -. In other areas students performed on instruments, sang or danced for mall patron enjoyment. Youngsters showed the variety of their learning when they took part in a "Knowledge Bowl" on Saturday. There were also displays and booths telling of the various classes offered through the community education program and adult high school programs. The transportation department set up a display to teach children about bus safety; and food services showed the changes that have been made in school lunch over the years. Representatives of the district school board and administration were also available to explain district policys, answer patron questions about programs - and give directions to other activities. In all, nearly every division in the school district was involved in the fair in some way, Ms. Barber said. She said the education fair gives people who don't have children in school the opportunity to see what is going on in public education, giving the public an opportunity to get in touch with the schools and what is 2iRj m in education today. |
