Old mill conjures up past memories by GARY BEST Carles S. Conrad started building the old mill located up the south fork of Provo Canyon in 1919. However, he passed away later that year of influenza. His son, Elwood, now 84, finished the mill the following year. Over the years the mill has served a number of purposes using many types of power. For a time, horsepower was tried to run a thrashing machine. Later, water spower was used to turn a saw to cut wood for heating and cooking. The water spower never provided the needed RPM's. Finally, batteries bat-teries and a gasoline engine were installed and the mill was used on into the 30's to cut firewood. ' Mill building was not new to the Conrad Family. Shadrack Holdaway, Eldwood's grandfather, was sent to the Provo area by Brigham Young when the Saints first colonized the area. He con structed the areas first woolen mill on 5th West in Provo between Center Street and First North where Albertsons store now stands. ' He also built a water spowered shingle mill in Shingle Mill Canyon up Hobble Creek giving the canyon-its canyon-its name;"' The old mill and surrounding ; property is presently owned by ; Elwood's newphew Darel A.
