Show 'Lusty month of May' brings spring p.g. blab v By MARCKLI.A WALKER May is finally here and spring seems to have come with it. Someone said to me the other day that this is the first time in about three years that we have had spring. Actually, I think we had spring one day last year. May brings a feeling of spring in just the name alone. A tiny, little short word, May, but it conjures up quite a feeling in many hearts. In the movie "Camelot", they sing the "Lusty month of May" and that kind of says it all, doesn't it? May is maypoles, may baskets, Mother's Day, my birthday, and Memorial Day. It is school being out, sitting on the school lawn during the lunch hour, the Prom, and Morp. It is the Senior Sob assembly, it is banquets for every organiztion in the school, it is tryouts for everything from cheerleading to Orchesis. It is hallelujahs from the teachers and shaving cream facials from the kids. It is shorts, tank tops and sunburns. sun-burns. It is convertibles with the tops down and honking horns. May is flowers, new lambs, and green sprigs coming out of newly plowed soil. It is clean out the garage time, wash the windows time, and throw out the winter's junk time. May is pastel popsicles, gallons of soda pop, and picnics. It is a stroll in the park, lawn chairs on the grass, and a new dress. It is sandals, barefeet, and barelegs. May is warm, but not too hot. It is wrong. My dad was born in May, too. That made it kind of special. You may be surprised to find out that I did not ask for a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting like I usually do. The reason is simple. Chocolate is causing my body to do funny things that it didn't use to cause. I hesitate to say anything about old age setting in because I keep telling the children that I am still just a kid. It Is hard to convince a teenager that the 40's isn't old. I remember when I was 18 and I thought anyone over 30 was nearly a goner. It certainly is all relative. The closer I get to 90 the younger it seems. I tell the kids they will feel that way, too, when they reach this age but they say they I am nearly pushing daisies now. They help the ego a lot. It is strange, though, that you feel inside just like you did when you were 20 but when you look in the mirror this aging chick looks back at you. It is a shock to the system. Melinda Merrill wrote me a nice card when I turned 40. She said, "Happy Birthday. Now you are 40. Now you are going to die." Granted, she was only 8 years old but golly, gee. She didn't know that when you are 40 you are just a kid. In fact you are just a kid when you are 50. That's what I told Melinda's mom recently. But as far as birthdays go, May is a nice time to have one I r when school didn't end in El? I graduated it ended in course, school didn't start ( ! Labor Day, either 3 tUntlla"e ' . It is shedding of winter skin, winter coats, winter hats. It is time for new hats, bleached hair, and fishing worms. May is definitely wonderful and it is good it is here. I was born in May. Today is the day I celebrate the 28th anniversary of my 21st birthday. I always figured : that May had to be the best month of the year to be born in and so far no one has come up with any reason to convince me that that thinking is |
