The Volunteers-on-Ca- ll program l provide very needed lergency aid to the residents at TS when regular full-tim- e staff ; unavailable. Cooperating with rjy Dixon, Professional Con-ta-for Developmentalists, and b Hunt, Director Training and iff Development, this volunteer jgram will provide 10 full-tim- e n call" individuals who can Timit 1 or 2 days a week (Monday ough Sunday), hours 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to the Developmentalist Department to help ease limited staffing ratios. Judy Dixon commented that "this idea (on-cal- l) evolved from a real need at the institution. We are terribly short-hande- d during critical hours such as 6 to 8:30 a.m. and 4 to 8:30 p.m., expecially when regular staff call in and request emergency leave. Because of this gap in staffing, Mr. Hunt and I developed a new employee training program," continued Mrs. Dixon. "New employees will be provided classroom and practical hands on experiential training in the buildings. The hands-o- n training will ease some of the staffing gaps," she stated. To enhance this new training effort Mrs. Hiatt has suggested training 10-1- 5 volunteers who can be on-ca- ll as needed. "I plan to recruit volunteers for this program from several large areas," states Mrs. Hiatt. Mothers in transition are one source of volunteers. For instance, mothers whose children are in school from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and who are not quite ready for full-tim- e employment but wish to gain some practical ex-perience before going into the job market could become valuable volunteers at USTS. The mothers will be trained as a full-tim- e staff. They could be considered for at USTS if they desired anu an opening were available. "Anothu source of valuable volunteers are the youth in Utah," smiles Mrs. Hiatt. "Our high school age volunteers are greatly ap-preciated. I i m to recruit 0 youth, ages to participate in this program. They could be available from 4 to 5:30 p.m. (a critical time for staff at USTS)." "Many of our volunteers use their experience at USTS as an aide in gaining employment either at USTS or in the community. Our volun-teers are considered staff and receive job descriptions, evaluations, letters of reference and recognition awards," slates Jeanne Blackburn, Volunteer Coordinator. According to Mrs. Hiatt, in 1983 the USTS was pleased to have 4,154 volunteers contribute 46,071 hours of service to the residents. These numbers reflected the equivalent of 22 full-tim- e staff per month or 204 full-tim- e staff per year. "This amounts to an average inkind cost benefit to USTS of $226,208.61 for 1983," she stated.
