Show Hearing on Rabbits A public hearing will be held tonight at 7: 15 in the city hall on a proposed rabbit processing plant on State Stre-t in Pleasant Grove. The planning commission is conducting the hearing. The public is invited to attend. International Industries has' proposed to locate and operate a multi-purpose Rex fur facility at 775 West State on the Matthews property. They will be reqqired by Pleasant Grove City to install a six inch water line from the East side of State Street to the property if the proposal is approved. In addition a six inch sewer line will have to be installed from the property across Ashrock's Property to 220 S. and east to State St. A fire hydrant will be required also. According to Jack Jeppson, the company would construct a 20,000 square foot building which would house a breeding area, holding area, processing plant and tannery. Mr. Jeppson said the city had been assured that it would be a self contained building, very sanitary and no odors are anticipated. Jeppson also noted that detailed covenants for the entire processing operation would have to be agreed upon before any approval could be given. The three basic functions of this facility will be a breeding stock operation, a tanning plant and a meat processing plant. It is estimated that the plant will process a minimum of 6,000 rabbits per week. Profit per animal is in excess of $2.50. The Rex rabbits feature a very special fur. The retail price of a Rex breeding doe or buck will be between $200 - $250 per animal. Jeppson also added that the entire operation will have to be approved by the Utah Board of Health. City Engineer Lee Wimmer and Mr. Jeppson both indicated that at present they can foresee no serious problems with the proposal. |
