The sessions are scheduled for two five-hour five-hour blocks Tuesday and Wesnesday, beginning at 9 a.m. and concluding at 3 p.m. In these sessions, an intensive training will go on - conducted by a Junior Great Books Foundation leader flying in especially for the sessions. Parents, and teachers signed up for the course will learn about the Junior Great Books programs, how to effectively incorporate them into the schools and how to conduct the discussion encounters so children learn to think individually and read efficiently. Sally Taggart, newly elected president of ADAGE says the programs are "great for children who enjoy reading. It increases their capacity to find meaning in what they read, and boosts their retention skills." She encourages anyone interested in taking the training to call her at 768-8022 and sign on, course cost is $21. According to Taggart, the sessions can handle up to forty participants and there's still some room. The training is to be held in the Lehi Junior High School library, and leaders who complete the two-day course can then return to their schools qualified to help implement Junior Great Books programs for their children. Several area elementaries are already planning to use the reading series as a tool for challenging better readers, Forbes Elementary is one. The reading series run twelve weeks at a time; children read a variety of selected works -- both classic and contemporary - and attend discussions once a week to talk over their ideas, supporting conclusions with material read. |
