Show Violence in News Revolting, Mary Can t Stand It by Mary West Do you sometimes feel like you're so well informed that you can hardly stand it? I've always enjoyed listening to the news and finding out what was going on in the world. I find that I'm reluctant to turn on the evening news these days. We've had pronography and scandals and violence played up so much these days that it seems revolting. I feel sorry for the youth of today who see and hear of violence every day of their lives. We've had our national heros and we have held them in high esteem, but suddenly newspeople find it necessary to dig up ugly facts and tear apart those who are dead. Are we any better off by being told that people of national importance had scandals in their lives? It seems that the news media has taken a gossip columnist attitude. at-titude. The coverage of violence could arouse other groups to violence. How do you explain to youthful viewers the terrorist activities. Our senses become numbed to the things that we were shocked at a few years ago. When we read a newspaper its filled with the same thing. I recieved a call from Gary Bennett the other night. He said there was a fellow over in the cemetary putting little metal crosses and flags on the graves of the veterans. When I asked who it was, Gary said, "You know the guy that has the cannons." Well, that's Reed Radmall one of my neighbors. Gary felt this was news, something worthy of comment. There are many acts of kindness and goodwill that go un-reported. Yet people do notice and appreciate these services to fellow man. I believe that we are all hungry for goodness these days. We need to have good images and good deeds held up before us to look at. t |
