Show Women's Council Hears Talk on Drug Problems A meeting of the Utah County Coun-ty Women's Legislative Council Coun-cil was held in the Women's Culutral Center on Nov. 7. The program dealt with today's drug problems among our youth and was under the direction direc-tion of Mrs. Fred V. Jackman, health chairman. Mrs. Jackman introduced Dr. Eugene Fauz, director of the Youth Center at the Utah State Hospital. Dr. Fauz stated that the Youth Center was about 4 years old, and that only 110 to 120 children could be admitted yearly because of limited staff and space. Most of these youngsters young-sters require between 8 and 11 months treatment before they can be released. Dr. Fauz stressed the point that drug problems among the young people is a community problem and should be handled on a family, school and community com-munity level. Only when this fails to meet the needs of these children should they be put into in-to institutions. He made an appeal ap-peal for legislation to provide the means for separate physical physi-cal facilities, including a separate separ-ate building for housing youth, and a small gymnasium for the Youth Center. At the present time these children must be put into wards with adults. Dr. Fauz then presented a panel of six young people ranging rang-ing in age from 13 to 17 years, all of whom had been committed commit-ted to the hospital for drug addiction. Each youngster gave a short history and background of his particular problem and a question and answer period followed. |
