Show kill tapeworms Tape worms in farm fowls bowder obtained from indian plant found to be quite satisfactory prepared by the Us led states Dev demartt artt 1 of 0 agriculture kamala Kar oala a brownish powder obtained from a plant in andla and long used there as a drug has been found satisfactory for removing tapeworms tape worms from poultry this announcement Is made by the united states department of agriculture as a result of experiments peri ments carried on by dr maurice C hall and dr J E of the zoological division bureau of animal industry cause disturbances tapeworms Tape worms cause serious disturbances in chickens turkeys and other poultry the injuries ranging from to conditions simulating paralysis due to deficient diet some unit tanua resulting in death up to tile the arese prese present ot time no satisfactory treatment had been known the demand for a remedy has been insistent and was considered the more urgent in that the life histories of so many tape worms are unknown that satisfactory satisfactory preventive measures cannot be recommended om orn as yet et moreover More oer so far as life histories are known they involve such intermediate hosts as flies earthworms slugs and similar animals which are themselves very difficult to control under farm conditions the need for such a drug as kamala la Is therefore apparent the drug was tried out on chickens and six turkeys counts heing being made dally daily of the tapeworms tape worms removed the birds finally being killed to determine whether any of the parasites wt were re left the result indicated that a dose of one gram to a chicken removed all the worms in 10 19 cases out of 20 a much better result than has been secured with any other drug the dose for turkeys seems to be two grams way y to administer the I 1 investigators tin fig t lito rs say the beat meth aa d appears to be individual dosing with pills but that the use of capsules Is also satisfactory flock dosing by the administration of the drug in feed Is much less satisfactory the dosing of individual birds Is easily accomplished and fasting and purgatives purga tives do not appear to be important at the present time it may not be possible to obtain harhala at nil all drug stores but it Is thought that within a short time manufacturers manufacture is will have it on the market in convenient form art an estimate of the cost of the karnela itself for treatment of chickens Is less than ono one cent per bird |
