settlements tle ments carowan parowan and cedar city word were founded in the year yea 1851 the founding of the these be settlements was part of a giga gigantic itic scheme of president brigham young to conquer f for or civilization the inland empire of the te co country airy known as the intermountain intel mountain n I 1 west 0 within si a remar remarkably kabli short span of years aft after erthe the arrival of the great the salt lake valley he had practically lAly ercums circumscribed abed q V witha I 1 ring ng of outposts Ir there liere was fort im on thel the salmon river lit in what I 1 is S now idaho there was was fort supply ort on the easa caroon valley in fim nevada on the west and iron county counti santa anta clara and los on the south these thede iron county colW colonies les which in the beginning included also old fort harmony served as iesu ing stations and colonizing centers from which were drawn the settlers set flers for new settlements tle ments all through what is now southern utah I 1 I 1 in the v winter n anter of 1849 and 1850 an exploring party sent out by brigham young discovered the great beds of iron from which this county takes its name iron was scarce in theowest th ewest andea ces expensive because 6 of the great cost of freight from the missouri river biver by ox team and abid yet it was indispensable the discovery of the iron ore perhaps set far ahead the colonization of this section of country for the great leader conceived the idea of manufacturing iron at this point to supply the inter needs to impress the i advanced period of iron county settlement jt is only necess necessary to say that there was no town south of 61 provo ind and the first company sit saw tio no white man after leaving that sect section fori iron was as actually if manufactured here in cedar city asi as early arly as the fall of 1862 and thereafter for some some seven or eight int intensive ett sive efforts wire were put forth ao produce lt it in commercial quantities casti castings ng s of exceptional quality were produced from the very Pegi beginning fining but the ithe workers never succeeded in manukas manufacturing a satisfactory malleable iron because of the determination of president young gouni to i build up a suc successful iron industry here there were among the early settlers of this section a number of Idi lily trained e engineers mechanics and experienced e iron iron workers the best men that could be found the influence of these trained mm minds d 1 grea greatly HY in enriched riched thi the social and civic civic life of the colony in those early days 1 in 1868 1858 cedar city had a I 1 IT tion of 1000 people many of whom or most of whom had been attracted here by prospects prospect of an industrial community I 1 the coming of JAhn hn stona army with their enormous apply of implements chains andiron and iron of all kinds somewhat relieved the iron abo shortage stage in utah and liy by the year 1860 the building of the railroad into utah was assured this thia solved the freight problem and insured an ample supply of iron and the local industry was abandoned I 1 after the breakup break up of the 1 iron works miny many of the settlers left the town some went to california Califor nm and others to pioneer ney net settlements in various parts of southern utah the principle industry of the section has always been ban its livestock the climate was good forage abundant and there was an ideal combination of winter and summer ranges livestock therefore flourished from the bekin beginning nini and the fact that they could be transported to market an on the hoof has made this industry the caun coun arys on one ebest best jet bet farming hasteen has been i successful to the extent of the count rys weeds needs but until recent years yearn the 66 markets for farming products were io so far away that there lias has been no incentive to produce apy any great surplus I 1 the coming of the railroad into cedar valley has stimulated fa farming activities activity es to the extent that more tore land perhaps ha has been brought under cultivation 13 in tho the last five years than in all
