Show dam across navajo lake blasted again the dam built across navajo lake in kane co county anty in 1935 through the efforts of sportsmens sports mens clubs and the state fish and game commission was blasted open again last week according to reports in the daily papers on monday of this week this is the third time this dam has been blown out and this time the job was done more effectively than in either of the other attempts this time a fifty foot opening was made in the dike with an estimated 5 I 1 acre feet of water escaping through the opening into tiie the sinks in the east end the job is thought to have been done by those who were not in favor of the dike in the beginning or who have felt that the water fed springs used for irrigation and shutting it out of the sinks deprived them of needed water the blast this time occurred some time last thursday night just a few hours before the opening of the ce dar long valley road which links highways 89 and 91 over the mountains bains the dike is located at the south end of the three mile long lake and holds the water in the west end for raising fish for anglers in southern utah before the water lost itself in the porous sinks of the east end holding the level of the lake down too low lor for raising fish with the dike in the lake has become a fine fishing resort with many thousand visiting the lake each year rebuilding Rebul ding the dike cannot be undertaken at the present time because of the condition of the roads leading to the lake and the water loss sustained will have to be made up after the breach in the dike is fixed |
