| Show washington i K N S on OUR congressman W K GRANGER burink the session of cona as group of the members or iced ii ed themselves ves independent ol o the house to make a study of un social security and plu her er related related social problems this lib committee of the general com ilce has met at beast once a belc ek to make studies especially of ison S and following is id age pen peni sons e report ot of the subcommittee committee sub to e general committee the house conference on un met on oil monday even way may ath and heard beard a report cm in its sut subcommittee sub committee on social arity and old age pensions this house members meets aup up of reg farly arly and seeks primarily to work uj it a program which will enable ig e nation to avoid a depression id d unemployment arien me per perica oa of great defense spending in over jn in contrast to an apparent lack fin interest terest in the nations capital I 1 domestic problems the confer ence on unemployment heard 9 vigorous discussion from its subcommittee on this vital subject of old ald age security in which the following points were unanimously presented this committee believes that tile the establishment of an old age pension program which will not hot only protect against want and insecurity for the older people of america amer ica but will also be a means of maintaining I 1 a balance between the power to produce and their power to consume is vital to the welfare of the united states stales while the committee believes major emphasis should probably be placed upon old pensions it lecog cizes the absolute necessity of continuing and extending the program of aid to dependent children widowed mothers the blind and disabled we believe that it is not our function to endorse any bill but instead to recommend a general policy to be adopted that general policy should the committee believes provide for a a general federal old age pension system with uniform direct payments throughout the nation to all persons over 60 years of age b support of the system on a pay as you go basis by special taxes including a broad general tax as well as taxes which will have the effect of transferring otherwise idle funds into the stream of active buying power |
