Show AAA ASKS EXPANSION OF conservation PROGRAM more soil conservation on iron county farms is the goal of tile the 1940 AAA farm program directed by the agricultural conservation association J M palmer chairman of tile the county association announced this week american agriculture plowed itself into a predicament during the last war when we turned un der the sod of acres of land that should have been left in grass that land become the dust dus bowl in the early it has bus taken hard expensive work to bring that situation under some semblance of control mr palmer said nations in europe are arc fighting for land they dont have we are waging a fight over here to keep what we do have A total of acres of present and former cropland have been ruined already the equivalent roughly of one fourth the area now used for production of crops now we must help eln the farmers of the nation conserve the crop land the grazing land and the one third of the national forest resources which arc on farms in irrigated and diversified areas of utah including iron county farm farmers in will be encouraged to use more of the soil conserving practices which have been proven to be effective for their own types of farm mr palmer said practices toward which particular attention is focused by conservation emphasis in the 1940 program include these controlling noxious weeds with clean cultivation or chemical methods on designated plots plan tinga protecting and improving stands of forest trees for wind and water erosion control payments up to 30 per farm exclusive of all other farm program payments may be earned by planting forest trees building of check dams in irrigation aaion water ways to control erosion sion leaching and seepage mulching with straw or hay on orchards and commercial vegetable lands renovating Renova ting alfalfa by cultivation when such practices are judged beneficial to the stand application of where such fertilizer is needed mr palmer pointed out that only the practices which are beneficial to any particular farm will be approved for payment he urged that each farmer in the county talk over his pr problems oblenis with a member of his county or community committee before starting his own soil building program |
