Show road commission plans canyon road repairs that Pa rowans main canyon road leading to cedar breaks will be substantially improved this season was the promise made by the state road commission to the iron county commissioners and representatives senta tives of various civic organizations on tuesday of this week the road commission also promised to make an early survey at the bridge at the head ot of parowan carowan main street with a view to flattening the dangerous curve there and reducing the number ot of accidents which happen there this promise was made when lt it was reported that at least twenty six accidents have there to date the commission spent the day in this county going over the road program with the county board and tuesday evening were guests ot of the county at an informal dinner on the floor at the thornton drug store at which representatives presenta tives veit of the parowan carowan exchange club and the chamber ot of commerce and junior chamber ot of cedar city were also present A promise to oil a mile ot of road west of cedar city near the forks ot of the lund and modena highways had been made during the day arid and at the meeting in the evening they indicated that a project to widen and lower the big bridge north of 0 cedar city would probably be included in next years state road program this latter matter was brought to the commissions atten lion by president morgan rollo of 0 the cedar city chamber who pola ted led out that the bridge in its present condition is a danger spot to both motorists and pedestrians because approaching vehicles from either dirl direction can not be seen 6 10 1 0 from rom the 0 botn akier er side and because pedestrians in large numbers are forced to share the bridge with vehicles particularly when race meets rodeos carnivals or funerals are tn in progress north of the bridge the commission stated that money is available tor for hanging temporary foot paths to the sides of the present bridge it if that is desirable but chairman hammond suggested that rather than expend funds for such a purpose now and having to junk it all when the bridge la Is widened it might be more desirable to delay any temporary improvements discussing the parowan carowan canyon road the commission explained that since it a part of the federal highway system federal aid an all not be had bad tor for construction but that it is the purpose of tile the commission to put some of tho tha states heavy equipment in the canyon as soon as it is available to knock ott off some ot of the points smooth the road up and fix tho the bridges so it Is usable and capable of at handling the traffic in case the cedar canyon should become block I 1 ed forest supervisor bettenson Bet who was also at the meeting indicated hat his department would probably do some repair work on tile the road from the forest boundary south it if the state Int improves proves the road to that point the supervisor stated that maintenance ace and improvement work on the dixie forest roads are under say aay starting with the double tracking ot of the navajo lake spur and gravelding gra velling the strawberry point stretch improvement work is also to be done dona on the cedar breaks panguitch lake the vermilion castle and other roads during the season the road commission stated that within the mouth month contracts willibe will be let by the bureau ot of public roads for or extensive construction on the cedar canyon road and that we may expect that road to be made wide aa sate to and dustless within the next few years commissioner P G petersen in commenting on oil the road stated that up tip to now it has been a black eye to the system and one ot of the chief reasons why cedor breaks attracted more publicity and more tourist travel but that this condition is to be eliminated as rapidly as possible present at the dinner from piro wan were commissioner commission er ivan pecker decker mayor A C hatch councilmen john II if pendleton arid and walter C t mitchella Mitchel Ml lp ray D garner H C parcells and W W matchell Ml |
