Show countes Coun tys first political convention 80 years ago iron countes Coun tys first political convention was held just eighty years ago today and the first election the following day or lust just tour four days after the arrival of the pioneers to this place this information together with much more that is of interest particularly ticul arly to descendents of those pio pioneers 11 eer a and to residents of iron county is gleaned from a copy made by the late wm win C mitchell Mil chell of the official record of those pioneers a part of which has previously been published in previous issues ct p t the times unfortunately the original 1 re cord which was made by john D lee as bleik of the company and henry lunt as assistant clerk was taken by the latter into old mexico and there destroyed with mr lunts aunts home by tire fire so the copy made by wm win C Alit mitchell eliell and now lit in the hands of his family together with one or two copies which have been eon made front from that one by president palmer are the only detailed information available concerning the settling of iron county many readers are keeping copies ot of the times containing the account of the coming of the pioneers it was our intention originally to publish only the record of the journey here but thal thai has ar arrous roused ud such general interest and the events which followed their arrival are likewise so interesting that we have decided to give lit in successive issues the remainder of the record which mend mentions ons tile the events though not a daily record until the first of the following year including the settling of cedar city our last issue tl it will be recalled recorded tho the arrival at center creek parowan carowan Pa rowan and the naming ot scouting parties to explore the canyon etc we continue with the re cord of the days which followed TUESDAY JANUARY 1851 the companies started this morning according to their several appointments point ments in the evening those who had been up center creek canyon reported that about six miles from camp they had found some very tine fine saw timber mostly white pine the day was fine in the evening very windy V wednesday january 1851 today a bridge was built across the creek as we intended to move other side as soon as convenient ven veni ent lent day fine but windy thursday january lath 1851 the day was beautiful and tine fine about 2 p ni captain jer ferson hunt with 4 or 5 men arrived at our camp on their way from southern california to salt lake city president G A smith and ana party returned at 4 p in the camp was then called together in iii the Eap capacity acly bt bf a conven Uon for the purpose ot of nominating persons to fill the various county offices also district offices dr win A morse was chairman and james lewis clerk of convention A full ticket was nominated friday january 1851 this day an election was held in due form of law john P barnard simon baker and thomas S smith judges and henry lunt clerk of c lc clion the voting was done hy by ballot votes were acre polled the following named persons were unanimously elected jefferson hunt I 1 representative ellsha II if groves and edson whipple associate judges james A little sheriff janie james lewis icord corder cr joseph horn assessor and ami collector almon L fulmer supervisor of roads magistrates anson call J U D lee aaron farr fan and tarleton Tar loton lewis sealer scaler of weights and measures phillip B lewis constables Z 13 decker charles W dalton samuel A woolcy and chas liall hall at the close of 0 the two discharges of artillery were tired fired by captain company the whole company then sat down to a splendid dinner given in honor of captain blunt and his california boys who abe were then saluted by three discharges ot of artillery captain hunt made a short speech at tile the close of bt the dinner and some toasts were given the party was then diar dismissed eissed by bv prayer and in five minutes all appearance pe arance of the dinner had disappeared altho persons had feasted the rest of the evening was has spent in a dance given by the captains ot of the companies to our R depre tonta tentative tive captain hunt fp |
