Show BARLEY VS CORN FOR DAIRY COWS the 1027 1927 acreage of barl baraiy za in towa iowa was considerably larger than that of 0 1920 1926 reports credited iowa with acres la in 1028 1023 and on september 1 1927 the total production in 1927 was nearly twice that of 1920 1926 it Is generally considered that ground barley Is equal pound for pound to ground corn as a part of a well balanced grain mixture for milk cows in fact carefully conducted tests at some of our experiment stations have corroborated this general assumption last summer the michigan e experiment ap er station realizing that tile the barley acreage was increasing Iner cusIng in that state conducted another last with corn and barley two lots ot of cows were fed ench each composed of uve five head lt I 1 was given a grain mixture of pounds ground corn pounds ground oats and pounds linseed meal of tills this the cows which were stellis were fed at the rate of one pound for each alir thre e and one halt half pounds of milk produced per day in the way of roughage they were given dally one pound of alfalfa hay and three pounds of corn silage per pounds live weight lot 2 was fed tile the same grain mixture except that in place of pounds ground corn pounds of ground barley was substituted lot I 1 was fed the corn mixture for a period of 20 days while lot 2 was fed the barley mixture for the tha same length of time then the rations were switched and lot 1 was fed the barley mixture for a period of 20 days while lot 2 was fed the corn mixture after summing up the production for these periods the conclusion was reached that barley gave as good results pound for pound as the corn mixture this test may therefore be considered as additional evidence of the equality in the feeding value of these to tao grains for milk cows |
