| Show AMERICAN FOREST WEEK aaril 22 28 BY PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF CF AMERICA A proclamation for several years a special w week eek has been set apart for public discussion ot of our forests and of what neuel be done to safeguard and restore them among the agencies making for progress in this direction american forest week has proved its usefulness and I 1 am glad to proclaim it again and to announce that canada Is again concurrently ob observing sering a similar week the rehabilitation of our forests demands first of all that the forest tire fire evil be suppressed many of tile the forested states with the compera tion ot of timberland owners have undertaken organised organized sed protection against forest tires fires and in recent years under the clarke mcnary law the federal government has given its support to the movement this great cooperative enterprise must bo be extended and strengthened until unfit every forested country in the united states is safeguarded against fires but we e are still tar far from the goal of complete protection every year on the average tires fires scourge our woodlands steadily undermining their vitality for this bad situation the blame tails falls equally on us all public agencies rarely provide profile adequate protection against tire fire the timberland owner Is too often indifferent to his property the forest worker is too often neglectful of 0 the future forest the average citizen is too often careless with tire fire in the woods we must all gaill such re respect hect for the forest that its destruction through indifference or shall be unthinkable we can call not permanently abuse our forests with impunity the soil is the ultimate source ot of all wealth and of life itself one fourt bof ot our american soil Is best suited tor for forests much of this land is already idle more of it Is being made idle by destructive logging and fire yet cecan not safely permit our forest land to I 1 lie is fallow and useless any more than we can permit our farms and factories to lie idle to make our vast empire of 0 forest land fully productive ot of continuous crops of timber alii will have momentous consequences in our national life it will give agriculture the a advantage di d I of 0 a new and valuable valuable crop i it will afford permanent employment to millions of men inert in the forest I 1 industries IV it will provide raw materials for many industries it will furnish traffic tor for our railroads it will maintain foreign and domestic commerce it will restore our forests as con conservers servers of soil and water and as givers elvers of health and pleasure to our people we already have made a beginning in forest renewal but tile the task is stupendous aad we should permit no satisfaction over what has been done to blind us to the magnitude ot of what remains to be done NOW THEREFORE I 1 CALVIR CALVIN CW Limiti of tile the united w OL 01 do designate and set bet aside as american 1 korest or week the week april 22 and ending april as in tais year of 1928 1028 1 I recommend to the governors ot of the various states anat they also designate this week tor for special observance by all our people and that where practicable and not in conflict with laar la or custom arbor day be observed during the course ot of the same week I 1 urge that during that week all citizens and appropriate prop organizations including public officials legislators business organizations educators editors clergy clergymen mp landowners and others jo give thought to the preservation and wise use of our forests to the end that energetic forest policies will be adopted in all communities IN WITNESS WHEREOF I 1 have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal ot of the united states to be affixed DONE at the city caty ot of W washington ashington this day of february in the year of our lord one thousand ulna nine hundred and twenty eight and of the independence of the united states of america the one hundred and fifty second by the president CALVIN COOLIDGE secretary of state FRANK B KELLOGG PT |
