Show DIVERSITY OF NEEDED the reconstruction period which struck us rather forcibly about a year since since has revealed to us unmistakably the falacy of having all our eggs ili in one basket or in other words of rel ing almost entirely upon one or two industries or branches of industry for our income there is no gainsaying gain saying that the sheep industry supplemented in slight degree by the cattle has made this country and we are justly proud of the ever ex tending reputation we have for the production of parowan carowan vallel valley ram bouillette bou ilette sheep that the production of wool and mutton will continue to be our principal industry goes without saing and the individuals divi duals who are engaged have no fear but that if they continue as they have done over a period of years they will make good money at it that there will continue to be off years and market slumps such as we are experiencing perien cing at present is to be expected and it is during just such times that we realize the necessity for greater diversity of industry one 0 ne of the branches of agriculture which might be encouraged and developed locally is that of dairying the production of butter cheese and milk the chief advantages of such an industry are that it produces a steady or regular monthly income throughout the year advantageously supply the seasonal incomes from the sales of livestock wool and farm products inquiry as to the conditions in beaver county reveals that the reconstruction beroid has riot not affected them nearly so seriously ly as it has us and they account for it in the fact that receipts from their dairies have bridged them over and with a steady income from that source they have been little affected then too dairying would provide a more uniform distribution of labor throughout the year one of the reasons we farmers in this locality do not accumulate wealth more rapidly than we do is the fact that our work all comes during the spring summer and fall and that during the winter months we have no in income and what we have produced during the summer is utilized to sustain su stain us during the winter again because of range conditions etc it is not possible for all of us to engage in the sheep industry even if that were desirable but it is entirely possible jor for every farmer to have from two to six or even more good dairy cows thereby utilizing profitably a lot of time particularly during the slack seasons that is now productive nonproductive non with the everin ever in creasing facilities for the disposition and trans transportation por tation of such products the ease with which cream particularly can now be handled and the profitable disposition which can be made of the products byproducts by such as skimmed milk in the production of pork and poultry products it seems highly probable that this is one of the branches of agriculture which can be profitably developed elsewhere in this issue announcement is made by one of the creamery corn com companies of the state that they are installing for our convenience in one of the local places of basim business scales and testing outfit so that cream can be delivered and paid for at time of delivery in our own city there is is also much talk just at present about establishing a creamery in in Seu southern thern I 1 utah and while it may not be located here yet it will make the establishing tab lishing of the dairy industry more desirable our pastures would have to be developed but no one questions that some ne good pasture grasses introduced into our alfalfa fields would solve that problem fand besides it take takeovers tak every overy much pasture for three or four good dairy cows especially where grain and ensilage can be produced as easily Ss is it ca can ii be here it is a problem which ii worth considering mr john L lowder jr johnny has bas been in a very critical condition tor for several days others who have been on the sick list are our druggist mr pinder finder and granville warren the two later gentlemen g e have recovered however of |
