for forthe forthe forthe the newborn babies It had been a difficult delivery and the young mother had died What could a young man alone do with twin babies HE TRIED He hired a woman woman woman wo wo- wo- wo man to care for the babies and the little family muddled along alonE for a few years but DUt by the time the babies were a year old it was evident the boy Larry was not going to grow up to be a strong healthy young man t. t He could not sit in his high chair without being propped on pillows His sister Linda was crawling all over the little apartment into everything but Larry was still unable to pick up a simple object and get it to his mouth AFTER THREE years the young father had taken all he he could of working all day at a low paying job and coming coming coming com com- ing home to the care of two babies one active and curious curious curious cur cur- ious the other seeming to gro grow more helpless as he matured One day the father did not come home from work and after a while the woman who cared for the children called Family Services and the children were turned over to toa toa toa a public agency WHEN THE father was definitely proven to have abandoned the children Linda was palsy and would require extensive medical treatment He was placed in a foster home and then another foster home until he was thirteen when he was placed i in 1 Mrs Nelsons Nelson's Nelsons Nelson's Nelsons Nelson's Nel Nel- sons son's care MARTHA I NELSON is one of the heroines of this world who do not wear medals med medals als but deserve them She takes handicapped children children children chil chil- dren into her home and heart and gives them the love and care which very often their own parents could not find for children who will always require a great deal of care LARRY SPENT many months of his growing up years in hospitals with a series of operations and of course Mrs Nelson did not have to pay for this medical care She was paid by the state to care for Larry if money can ever be said to pay for love In her home Larry was finally taught to feed himself himself himself him him- self and to care for his basic needs It was laborious work requiring hour after patient hour of directing uncooperative hands to learn how to grasp an object how to let go of it how to raise a hand and hold an object at the same time Larry and Mrs Nelson persevered and by dogged persistence he graduated from high school THAT SHOULD have been enough For a boy who found the simple task of propelling a wheel chair almost impossible impossible impossible im im- im- im possible high school was a areal areal areal real accomplishment but Larry wanted more so with Mrs Nelsons Nelson's help he entered entered entered en en- college He craved knowledge for its own sake and he felt that books held the key to happiness for him Eventually Eventually Eventually ally he earned a PhD degree He will never be able to go goo goi goto i o to an office and earn a large salary with his knowledge but he is able to do research Wand ind to write technical papers which only experts can understand understand understand un un- and in this he can find a degree of fulfillment WHEN HE is congratulated on his accomplishments Larry says simply I HI didn't do anything Mrs Nelson deserves all the credit Well maybe not all but a 3 great deal Larry was not her own son yet this great hearted hearted hearted heart heart- ed woman was able to find love and compassion for a ayoung ayoung ayoung young boy who without her would probably have spent I most of his life in a nursing nurs- nurs urs- urs ing home THERE ARE not a great many women like Martha Nel Nel- son She is one of a rare breed who seem to have an inexhaustible source of patience patience patience pa pa- tience and compassion for the unfortunate of this world There are many troubled I children in our society and an unending need of Mrs bits Nelsons Nelson's to care fare for them THE STATE of Utah Salt Lake County Family Services Services Services ices is always looking for special people who have more love to give than they are aregi gi giving ng Troubled children dont don't al always always al al- i 1 ways look troubled and often r those with twisted personalities person person- I r need even greater care than Larry needed J LARRYS LARRY'S problems were great but Mrs Nelson could see and come to grips with witha a boys boy's physical infirmities y Even greater compassion is 1 needed for the teenaged boy or girl who problems cause them to act in ways of which society does not approve and to say things which people do donot not want said r But the needs of these JI troubled young people are as 5 great as as Larrys Larry's need j IT WOULD seem are a warm-hearted warm people since there are more homes for normal children than there are children who need homes even for children who in many communities would be considered difficult to J place There is still a great need however for home for troubled troubled f fled I led young people especially teenagers I 1 MU RACIAL MULTIRACIAL RACIAL and even f s handicapped children are readily read- read i i ily accepted in fine homes but there is still a need for i Martha Nelsons to care for I troubled children 3 The more problems a i youngster young- young K ster has the more love and h understanding he needs but it is unfortunately true that the more love a youngster needs the more he is apt to todo a ado do things which drive away most who could people supply that love 1 THERE ARE however sPecial special special cial people As Emily Dickinson Dickin-
