Show FROM BOSTON nellie durham writes interesting letter to the times boston nov 21 1815 editor times parowan carowan Pa rowan utah allow us the privilege of giving three cheers for the times par first newspaper we have received copies up to date and enclose a years subscription price no one will enjoy the home paper more than we will when one is far away no news is more enjoyable than events transpiring among the people of the dear town we notice through your columns that a choral society has been organized and we feel like saying to everyone put your shoulder to the wheel and help push a good cause along another thing of special interest is the splendid lyceum course for this winter that is to be given givena at home thome we note mr moran olsen comes in this course dont miss hearing mr olsen he is splendid we had the pleasure of meeting him here just before he left for cleveland Ohio where he began his first engagement on this years lyceum course he goes all over the united states this winter as dramatic reader we missed his recital here not knowing the date but heard him at a house party and if you want one good laugh hear mr olsen give the man alan with the bone colored whiskers we are enjoying our stay here in boston very much there are nearly fifty utah students here this winter and with a local branch of the church being here we meet very often mr durham is pursuing courses in piano under carl Stas nya pupil of the great faraz list voice under mr arthur hubbard and private lessons also in counter point and composition with mr F stewart mason who recently arranged an interview with geo W chadwick director of the conservatory for mr durham to take his compositions in for inspection mr chadwick was very enthusiastic in his praise for the work and commented that they were of a high order and showed a great deal of ability and natural talent I 1 was engaged constantly teaching in the boston schools the past three weeks which is really more than I 1 cared to do as it takes me away to much in substitute work in a big city like boston though there is no end of good ideas to be gathered in going from one school to another ia last st week I 1 was in a girls grammer school including the four upper grades in this particular school there are four eighth grades with fifty girls in each room I 1 did not learn how many rooms or the num her ber enrolled in the other three grades the four teachers who do this eighth grade work each has her own line of work and teach it to the four classes to illustrate the teacher for whom I 1 substituted taught only reading grammar and spelling four classes of each daily spelling excepted and how bow those girls could read they were just finishing Long fellows evaer and it was as good as a dramatic recital tome I 1 think I 1 have never been in so perfect a class in order application of students and results obtained I 1 have also had the privilege of teaching in boston school fol crippled and deformed children in this school which takes only the children from boston proper and not what is known as greater boston there are little crippled boys and girls between the ages of six and fourteen ohl oh what hat a pitiable sight they present when anyone goes there first and even afterwards if you allow your mind to turn baek bach to discover the cause for so many unfortunates the school of course has a record of each child and many are crippled through accident yet the principal told me methe the greater per cent were from cruelty degradation and sin the school itself is wonderful the children are called for and brought to school and taken back in carriages their dinner is prepared in the domestic science department of the school the children take turns in serving the dinners and washing the dishes all the work throughout is in trying to give the unfortunates an education broad enough to fit them for life considering their handicaps manual arts and training handicrafts sewing shoe mending basketry and all such subjects are taught thoroughly enough to make a living then the school has in connection with it a department in each line taught doing work for the public in which the graduates graduate are employed A graduate nurse has the health of the children to see aft erand rest rooms bathrooms bath rooms massage rooms etc abound the children are served to a glass rf r f milk and crackers at morning recess and hot chocolate at afternoon recess the building is well equipped with material for every purpose elevators to carry the children who are unable to go by use of crutches wheel chairs for the weak and desks that can be adjusted to any deformity and the thing that struck me with the most force was the sunny disposition and happy spirit they went about their work with it surely rivaled if not exceeded any spirit I 1 ever felt in a class ablass of normal children on saturday nov mr durham will be the guest of prof samuel W cole ot ol the new england conservatory in attendance at the mass music teachers convention and banquet to be held at harvard university daniel gregory mason head of the music department of columbia university new york will be
