Show Lawson, Williams await NorAm selections by Randy Hanskat Jason Lawson and Scott Williams, Park City's two top male JI (ages 16-18) racers, had their last chance to impress the NorAm selection committee in two giant slaloms held at Solitude over the weekend. Both did well, and must now wait and see if they are selected Feb. 22 to the NorAm technical team. With the Park City women racing in two NorAm downhills down-hills at Beaver Creek, Colorado, Colo-rado, it was up to the men to make the headlines. Lawson responded with his best finish of the year, a third in Saturday's race. Williams, who has been coming on recently, was fourth. Lawson and Williams were the top JIs in Saturday's race. Jeff Sarchette of Sun Valley and Troy McRae of Solitude, in the first and second slots, are A (19 and older) racers. Sarchette's winning time Saturday was 97.55, while Lawson had a 98.88. Williams Wil-liams came in at 99.27. In Sunday's race Lawson dropped drop-ped to sixth. Williams did not finish. Park City A-JI coach Jim Clifford said Williams and Lawson are still "real borderline border-line for the NorAm team, but they look good for the JIs," he said, meaning that the two should make the Junior Olympic team in the JI bracket. The Junior Olympics for the JIs run from March 10-18. The first NorAm technical races begin March 22. Clifford complimented Scott Mitchell and Jason McKinley on their weekend racing. "Scott Mitchell had the race of his life, by far his finest in the season." Clifford Clif-ford was talking about Mitchell's Saturday race where he started far back in the pack but finished 13th. Jason McKinley took a ninth on Saturday and an 11th on Sunday. "He had a good solid weekend," Clifford remarked. The A-JIs now have a break while the NorAm team is selected. Their next action will start Feb. 29 with three downhills at Jackson Hole. |
