Show Crawford Gates to conduct S.LC Summer Pops concerts The third concert of the Utah Symphony's annual Summer Pops series will be presented July 22 at Symphony Sym-phony Hall, 8 p.m., and July 23 at Snowbird Pavilion, 5 p.m., under the direction of guest conductor Dr. Crawford Gates. The orchestra or-chestra will perform the concert version of Gates' "Promised Valley," a work originally written as a musical play for the Utah centennial in 1947. Guest artists art-ists will be JoAnn Ottley, soprano, Robert Peterson, baritone, Noel Twitchell, baritone, and the Utah Chorale. Dr. Gates serves concurrently con-currently as music directorconductor direc-torconductor of two orchestras: or-chestras: the Beloit-Janesville Beloit-Janesville (Wisconsin) Symphony and the Rockford (Illinois) Symphony. As a composer, he has produced works for stage, chorus, orchestra or-chestra and chamber orchestra, or-chestra, many of which have been performed by the Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, among others, as well as the Utah Symphony. He has over 100 works in publication and four commercially released recordings, with "Promised Valley," to be recorded by the Utah Symphony under his direction on July 25, 1983, being his fifth. Both JoAnn Ottley and Robert Peterson are veterans of numerous performances per-formances with the Utah symphony. Mrs. Ottley most recently appeared as soloist with the Utah Symphony in the May 21, 1983, performance perform-ance of Beethoven's Symphony Sym-phony No. 9 in Symphony Hall. Nebraska-born Robert Peterson has appeared widely on Utah stages, most notably with the Utah Symphony, Sym-phony, under the direction of Maurice Abravanel, in the Verdi Requiem and in a multitude of musicals at Pioneer Memorial Theatre, including "South Pacific," "My Fair Lady," "Camelot" and "Man of La Mancha." Noel Twitchell, a native of Delta, Utah, has appeared locally at the Promised Valley Playhouse, Pioneer Memorial Theatre, and with the Utah Opera Company since its inception, most recently singing the role of Warden Frank in "Die Fledermaus." Again joining forces with the Utah Symphony will be the Utah Chorale. Trained and rehearsed by Music Director Ed Thompson and Associate Director Bonnie M. Winterton, the 150-voice chorale is the official choral voice of the Utah Symphony. Tickets for the July 22 and 23 Summer Pops concert are now on sale at the Utah Symphony box office. Tickets for the Snowbird concert may be obtained in advance of the concert at Symphony Hall or at the Snowbird Pavilion prior to the concert on July 23.
