The Miners sucked it up and turned what could have been a lopsided basketball victory for Morgan into a barnburner at the end. With 2:17 left in the game. Morgan's Mont Johnson sunk a 10-foot jumper to extend the Trojan's lead to :!8-27. Miner head coach Paul Willard called a timeout. In the huddle he went over defensive assignments man-toman, fullcourt press. "Show them what you're made of," were his final words to the team. After a Miner miss, Bruce Buckner fouled Troy Kartchner at 1:29. Kartchner missed the one-and-one and 12 seconds later Greg King hit a 15-footer to cut the lead to 9 points. The Miner press caused a turnover and again King hit the shot from about 5 feet with 57 seconds on the clock. The Miner pres stymied the Trojans on the inbounds play, got the turnover and Keye hit a 17-footer to bring it to 38-33 with 43 seconds left. The Miner press again bothered the Trojans, but just la-fore the five-second call for the turnover could be made, Wade Murdock was caught pushing and Morgan turned the ball over. Keye was fouled quickly and went to the line for a one-and-one. The Miners were smelling a win and the seconds were, turning into hours for the Trojans. They were rattled and just wanted that last second to tick off the clock. Keye hit the first shot, but missed the second one. The Trojans rebounded and Scott Tatum fouled Johnson immediately. Trojan coach Ken Hunt called a timeout and when his team came out, four of the players were at the Miners' end of the court. Johnson stood at the line alone and threw up a brick. Keye rebounded, drove the length of the court, split i wo defender at the top ol the key and hit a 16-footer to make the game 38-36. The Miner crowd went nuts. Morgan took the ball out and with 0:16 on the clock Brett Benson fouled Murdock, giving him a one-and-one. Murdock did what he had to do and sank two free throws. Disappointing loss for the Miners? Sure. But they did not quit. And I'll take that type of team every time. Jennifer Harrington, city architect, announced that any residents who have not expressed an opinion on what to do with the grounds around the new recreation building should do so by Jan. 18. The Recreation Board really wants to hear from the locals. Those green posters you have been seeing all over town have cutaway cards at the bottom with some of the possibilities for use of the grounds listed on them. Fill it in. cut it out and mail it in or drop it off at the recreation department offices in the Memorial Building. Cards can be found at any church in town, the Marsac Municipal Building, the Memorial Building, all the schools and Texas Red's. Speaking of the Recreation Department . . . there is still time to get on a coed volleyball team. The teams will play at the Treasure Mountain Middle School every Wednesday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. It is advisable to sign up by Jan. 18. League play should start within two weeks of that date. Pam Bradford, Rec Department spokesman, said she was hoping for at least four teams and she would be willing to accommodate more if the interest is there. As of Jan. 13, three teams of six members each have registered. She added that it would be OK for a group to enter as a team. Singles interested in signing up may do so at the Recreation Department offices at the Memorial Building or phone 649-9321 to register.
