Unless otherwise noted, events listed below will take place in Salt Lake MOVIES With the World Series coming up, what better time for the time Salt Lake City Library to begin a movie series about baseball? The first film, on Sept. 6 is "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," a 1949 MGM musical musi-cal with Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra Sina-tra joining a team owned by Esther Williams. The film plays on Friday at 2 p.m. (for 25 cents) and 7 p.m. (for 50 cents). The library is at 209 East 500 South. At the Blue Mouse: In "The Return of Martin Guerre," Gerardd Depardieu is the long-missing husband who has returned to his wife or is he? ; "1918" looks at a small Texas town affected by world war and the historic flu epidemic; "Android" is a wry science-fiction tale with Klaus Kinski as an outer-space Dr. Frankenstein; and "The Last Wave" stars Richard Chamberlain as a lawyer drawn into the mystical world of Australian aborigines. The Mouse is at 260 East 100 South. , Through September, the Utah Media Center will present another "odd couple" pair of film festivals. The first is a series of films by the directing team of James Ivory and Ismail Merchant, a filmmaking team known mainly to cinema aficionadoes. It begins with "Roseland," the separate stories of three couples set in New York's famous Roseland ballroom. The second series deals with the most famous detective of them all, Sherlock Holmes. Later films in the Holmes series will be more recent, but we begin with a classic Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Holmes and Watson in the 1939 "Hound of the Baskervilles." The films are shown Friday through Saturday nights at the 'auditorium of the Salt Lake Art Center, 20 South West Temple. For furtner information about times and prices, call the Utah Media Center at 534-1 1Rfl MUSIC The Utah Symphony opens its season with a program of Weber Faure and Berlioz on Sept. 6 and 7 at 8 p.m. Tickets, at $10 and up, are available at the Symphony box office at 123 West South Temple, Basil's and Deseret Book. The Utah State Fair presents a stellar lineup of singing stars, including Sylvia (Sept. 5), Gordon Lightfoot (Sept. 6), John Davidson laepi. n, jeannie u Kiiey (Sept. 8), the Osmond Brothers (Sept. 9) and Janie Fricke (Sept. 11). Tickets are on sale at the Salt Palace, Special Events Center and Triad. Visiting Utah at ParkWest Resort this summer wasn't enough for Tears for Fears, so they're playing a concert Sept. 7 at BYU's Marriott Center, with opening act The Adventurers. Concert time is 9 p.m. The king of blues, B.B. King, will appear at the U. of U.'s Kingsbury , Hall Septp at 8 p.m. Special guest is the Paul deLay Band. Tickets, at 1 are avaifabie at Datatix outlets, Cosmic Aeroplane and Kingsbury box office. Tour de Force presents a free evening concert at Triad Center on Sept. 8 at 6:30 p.m. A second free concert will be presented at the Triad Amphitheatre by the Jay Welch Chorale Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. THEATRE -"Baby," presented by Salt Lake's Theatre 138 (138 South Second East) is a musical about three couples facing the idea of pregnancy. It plays Wednesday-Saturday Wednesday-Saturday through Sept. 28. For reservations, call the box office at 322-0093. David Mamet's "Life in the Theatre," presented by the New Shakespeare Players, deals with the changing relationship between a veteran actor and a novice. It is presented at Westminster College (1700 South 1300 East, Salt Lake) in the Courage Theater (second floor of Converse Hall). Regular admission tickets are $6, and the show plays at 8 p.m., Thursday-Saturday through Sept. 21. Say "Hello, Dolly" at Pioneer Memorial Theatre when it opens Sept. 11. It plays nightly (except Sundays) through Oct. 2 at 8 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sept. 28. Tickets range from $9.50 to $16. For more information, call 581-6961. "Fiddler on the Roof" stars Robert Peterson as Tevye in the Triadtheater of the Triad Center (300 West between North and South Temple), Tuesday-Saturday through Sept. 14. Showtime is 8 p.m., with a Sept. 14 matinee at 5:30 p.m. All seats are $6. Playwright James Arrington presents the eccentric characters of "The Farley Family Reunion" at Promised Valley Playhouse (132 South State, Salt Lake) in its Little Bowery Theater. It plays Wednesday-Saturday through Sept. 28at7:30p.m. ETCETERA The Kimball Art Center will present an exhibit by Park City painter David Chaplin in the Main Gallery. Watercolorist Eddi Malloy has an exhibit in the Lower Gallery. Both shows will open with a free reception for the artists Sept. 8 from 3 to 5 p.m. The exhibits will run through Sept. 30. The Hansen Planetarium, 15 South State in Salt Lake, presents the star show "Islands in the Sky" Monday-Saturday at 4:30 and 7 p.m., and Sunday at 2 and 4:30 p.m. Children's star programs on Saturday include "The Secret of the Cardboard Rocket" at 11 a.m., "A Closer Look at Digistar," a lecture by Hansen director Von Del Chamberlain, at noon and "Adventures Along the Spectrum" at 2 p.m. All activities are free. -The Utah State Fair runs Sept. 5 to 15 at the Fairgrounds in Salt Lake. Its featured attraction, the Ice Capades, plays the same dates at the Salt Palace, with general prices ranging from $6 to $9. It stars four-time four-time world champion Scott Hamilton and a host of others. -The Salt Lake Art Center, 20 South West Temple, presents 10 Utah painters in a Main Gallery exhibit until Oct. 1. . -The University of Utah football squad is scheduled to meet Boise State at Rice Stadium, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. Ticket prices range from $5 to $12.
