Show On the road with SH Shirley Smith Ttt , In GreeceJd Egypt k il In Greece, Turkey and Egypt. Park City people are venturing ever farther afield in search of exciting and unique vacation destinations and we are off once again in September to what we feel are some of the prime spots of the Mediterranean. We will be sharing our trip with 12 other adventurous souls and invite you to read on if this might be your kind of trip. September 15: The trip begins with a grueling flight schedule - leave Salt Lake in the morning for New York, leave New York that evening for Athens and after a brief layover continue on to Cairo with arrival scheduled for early evening September 16. For our week in Egypt we break tradition with our previous : trips by traveling in a rather more luxurious style. We begin by a 3 day stay in Cairo - lodging at the beautiful Cairo Hilton on the bank of the Nile - where we will have a chance to visit the famous step pyramid of Sakkara (the earliest manmade stone building in the world), the great pyramids of Chiops and Giza, the Sphinx, . the bazaars, the mosques and the many other wonders of this ancient and exciting city. You might even wish to take a camel ride across the desert. Early on the morning of September 19 we board our flight to Abu Simbel, one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. We then fly on to Aswan and an afternoon at leisure to visit the Aswan Dam or to experience the tranquility of Upper Egypt with a felucca sail on the Nile. We spend the night at the grand Aswan Oberoi on Elephantine Island and head the next morning for Luxor where we'll have plenty of time to visit the temples of Karnak and Luxor and the magnificent Valley of the Kings with the tombs of Tutankhamen and Ramses VI. We lodge in Luxor at the famed Old Winter Palace - the queen of Egyptian hotels for the past hundred years. Plenty of time to browse the bazaars, relax by the pool and soak up the magic of Egypt. September 22 finds us returning for a last afternoon and evening in Cairo and a morning departure on the 23rd for Athens. Two days here in the magnificent capital of modern day Greece with its treasures of ancient times and plentiful tavernas and sidewalk cafes. A late afternoon ouzo, dining and dancing in the Plaka and lodging at Clare's House, a small pension with a magnificent view of the Acropolis, make this a memorable stay. The morning of September 25 we fly off to Rhodes for a day on one of the most beautiful of Greek Islands and a late afternoon boat to Symi, our particular favorite of all the isles and a chance to really begin relaxing. Nestled close to the Turkish coast, Symi offers a taste of rural Greek living, lodging in traditional island houses and lazy afternoons at the local beach or more active ones hiking the myriad of stairs that form the town streets, and evenings at waterfront cafes or on the patio of Georgio's Taverna, high in the upper town. Our 3 days pass quickly and on the evening of the 28th we return once again to Rhodes where we are met by our private 21 meter (about 65 feet) Turkish motor sailer, the Kaptan. After a night at harbor's edge we set off for a magical 7 day cruise of Turkey's Turquoise Coast with a visit on the first day to the port town of Fethiye with its Lycian hill tombs. Here we load up on our week's supply of wine ($1.00 a bottle last year) and head off for isolated bays and islands. We anchor one night off a private island, another next to a Roman ruin and end our week with a visit to Marmaris, one of the Turkish Aegean's most charming towns. Thoroughly spoiled now after a week of being catered to by our crew, windsurfing, snorkeling, swimming in the bath water warm sea we make our way, finally, once again to Rhodes for a last night in Greece before returning the morning of the 6th of October to Athens and the U.S. If you would like to hear more about this special trip, join us for an evening of slides and details on Thursday, April 28 at 8:00 p.m. at Ziggy's at Park City Resort. Come early - food and beverage service available all evening. |
