Show Muckers Drop Two on the Road in Idaho by David Sundquist The Park City Rugby Club, The Muckers, went to a two game Rugby weekend in Boise, Idaho this past weekend week-end and some of the players probably wished they had stayed home in bed. For, in addition to dropping both contests, no less than eight Muckers were forced to leave the pitch with an assortment of injuries. None however, it may be happily reported were of a serious long-term variety. Game one was"'plaved Saturday afternoon at East Jr. High, at 4:00 against the Snake River Club from nearby Caldwell, ID. When the referee blew the whistle to start the match, both clubs looked strong and fairly evenly matched. After the initial jockeying around the pitch for the first ten minutes, Snake River found an overlap on the far side of the field and using three passes, managed to score a converted try. Park City still looked good in the remaining 30 minutes of the 40 minute long half, but at halftime. Snake River was ahead 10-7. Park City points came on a fine individual effort by Kevin MacKay, who popkicked to himself near the goal line after a ruck was won by both Park City backs and forwards. The try was not converted, although later Rick Phaler gave Park City its final scoring for this game on a penalty kick from 35 yards out. Unfortunately for the Muckers, the Snakes were far from done scoring and Park City's .injury troubles were just beginning. First John Sundquist went down with a torn cartilage on his ribs, then in quick succession Scott Marshall hurt his shoulder, although he heroicly tried to stay on the pitch and at one point stopped a two man Snake River attack with only one shoulder. Scott Thompson was the next Mucker victim with a pulled calf muscle. By the time the Muckers looked up and caught their breathe, it was Katie-Bar-The-Door, with the Snakes in a comfortable lead, as with only one reserve back Park City was forced to use towards against Snake River's powerful experienced back line, the final score was 30 for Snake River and 7 for the Muckers. The second game was played at 12:00 on Sunday morning again at East Jr. High. This time against the Motherlode from Boise. The starting line up for Park City Sunday was less formi-dible formi-dible than on Saturday as none of Park City injured backs were able to return and the entire front was composed of rookies. The Boise side was quick to take advantage of that fact and opened the scoring with a penalty kick after a scrum violation. Again, the Muckers Muck-ers were victims of a thinned out squad as the "Mothers" scored on a long fry where frequent tackles were missed. Again as on Saturday, Park City fell on hard times concerning injuries. injur-ies. Steve Gilly went off with a bad ankle as the Boise scored, in the first half ended. Park City was able to strengthen its front row with the action of veterens Bob Katie &DaveSundquist. This seemed to show as Park City scored to narrow the gap 7-4 on a fine score by a Montana University player. Park City picked up, after passes from Ken Tedford and Rick Phaler. The Muckers were further devastated at this point by the loss of Tom Lavder whose hand was stepped on and had to get x-rays. The second half saw much the same action as the first with Charlie Dowing and Steve Mann completing the injury parade, both with bad ankles. The scoring was completed by the Muckers on a fine play by first year player Mark (Coco) Uriarte, who broke up the middle of the field before passing off to Hammish McGeorger, a Snake River player who was playing for the injury-riddled Muckers. Unable to quite close the scoring gap the game ended in a 23-10 win for the Boise side. The two losses dropped Park City record to 3-3 and the Muckers, next game is the traditional 4th of July match with arch rival Dead Goat. Any changes in schedule, will appear in this section of the paper. t - - v i . s . v a V n ! 4 " |
