Duck Hunt Promising This year's duck hunt should be a little better than last year's, if the weather cooperates, according to Al Regenthal, waterfowl wildlife program coordinator of the Div. of Wildlife Resources. Early populations of birds on waterfowl marshes of the state numbered three-quarters of a million birds. However, the storms we had recently moved many of these birds out of the area. Birds are on the move, but that means more will be coming through Utah and the Oct. 2 waterfowl season opener should be a good one. Waterfowl biologists with the Division began making aerial waterfowl counts today to keep assessed of the numbers. Regenthal says about the same conditions existed for goose production in Canada. However, production in Utah and in other flyway states was excellent. Utahns should be able to expect a good goose hunt which begins on Oct. 9. Watch Out For Peregrine Falcon Utah waterfowl hunters are reminded by the Div. of Wildlife Resouices to be on the lookout for the endangered peregrine falcon on Salt Lake marshes this fall. Six young peregrines have been spotted recently along the east shore of the Great Salt Lake. With a natural peregrine mortality rate of over 60 percent, ,the Division hopes to avoid any additional mortality from hunters. The crow-sized falcon is blue-gray above and whitish below with dark vertical barring, although it often appears very dark in flight. The peregrine has a long tail and its wings are set forward on the body. A distinguishing characteristic is its dark "sideburns" against a white throat. It may be distinguished from other raptors by its deep rapid wing beats. The peregrine lacks the prominent waterfowl bill and, unlike waterfowl, is solitary during the fall. |
