Show How Park City Stands In State 1-A Playoffs The Park City Miners concluded Region 11 league play last Friday with a 34 to 0 victory over the North Summit Braves at home in Miner Field. The win gave Park City an eight and one record for the season so far and a three and one standing for league competition. The Miners play their final game of the regular season on the road Wednesday against Kearns High School's J.V. squad. Currently Park City leads Region 1 1 with their three and one standing ahead of Dugway and South Summit, each with two and one records. Both Dugway and South Summit play league matches Thursday and each have a chance to move into a first place tie with Park City. Both Dugway and Kamas . are highly favored to beat their respective opponents, South Rich and North Summit which makes a three-way tie for first place in Region 11 imminent. According to Region 11 policy, the tie would be broken on a net point basis, meaning the total points scored in league play against a team would be deducted from the total points that team scored against its Region 1 1 opponents, to arrive at a net score. The team with the highest net score will enter the state, 1-A playoffs as the Region 11 top seed and face easier opponents in the quarter and semi-finals. According to Miner Coach Bob Burns, the second place team in Region 11 will most likely play Monticello on October 29 from Region 12 in the quarter finals and the top ranked Kanab Cowboys on a neutral field in the semis, assuming that team gets by Monticello. The third place Region 1 1 team must first play the third place team in Region 13 on Tuesday, October 26 before advancing to the quarter finals against the Cowbovs at Kanab. The third place team in Region 13 will either be East Carbon, Duschesne or Altamont depending on the results of a playoff within that league. Park City's standings in Region 1 1 depend on the results of the South Summit-North Summit and Dugway-South Rich "games this week. If South Summit beats North Summit by five points they are assured of the top seed. In order to take second place in Region 1 1 , Dugway must beat South Rich by 50 points. If that happens and it could, Park City will go into the tournament ranked third. Burns is fairly certain South Summit will outscore Coalville by the prescribed points and go into the tournament ranked first The coach is hoping for second place and that means Dugway must not beat South Rick by the 50 point margin. Burns would much rather meet the powerful Cowboys on a neutral field in the semis than on their home turf right off the bat in the quarter finals. . Burns opposes the net point method of breaking the tie because it's not merely winning that counts but by how much. "It forces a team to play only for points and to run up the score as high as possible against hapless opponents," Burns said. . . , ' . High School Principal Jack Do.ier sits on the Board ot the High School Athlciics Assoc. and Jias vowed to insist the ruling be changed ncxt year. |
