A year's worth of hard work by The Park Record staff members was rewarded last Sunday when the paper was selected the 1979 "General Excellence" winner for its class by the Utah Press Association. The awards culminated this year's "Better Newspaper n Contest" which is sponsored annually by trie Press Association, Associ-ation, Utah's oldest trade organization. The 52 Utah weekly and biweekly bi-weekly newspapers which comprise the Association, compete in categories ranging from Best Front Page, Best News Story, Best Editorial to Best Use of Photographs, Best Community Service, Best Advertising Ad-vertising Campaign, etc. Underlying Un-derlying the individual awards is the highly coveted "General Excellence" plaque which signifies overall quality above all other papers in all facts of newspaper content and production pro-duction This year's contest was judged by the Kansas State Press Association which picked pick-ed first, second and third place winners in the many categories. Apart from the first place "General Excellence" plaque, The Park Record did well in individual categories. The Record's coverage of the shooting death of John Singer won first place honors in the Best News Story category, with an editorial on the subject placing second in that field. David Fleisher's "Ten O'Clock Whistle" received second place honors in the Best Editor's Column group. The general layout of the paper won first place honors, as did the picture and graphic jontent. A photograph by Nick Nass of wood-carver John Sharp was awarded " Best Feature Photograph" for the year out of all the Utah weeklies, and our "opinion" section received an honorable mention in the "Community Service" category. Our Christmas Christ-mas Catalogue won third place for Best Advertising Campaign. Cam-paign. In 1977, The Record was also awarded the "General Excellence" plaque which prohibited competition in the 1978 contest. The Record will again be prohibited from competing next year. The back-to-back "General Excellence" awards show that The Record has maintained a consistent level of quality and community service in recent years and is ever striving towards greater journalistic excellence. |
