INCREASES Ninety-six times as much money mo-ney was required from automobile automo-bile owners to pay gasoline taxes in 1929 as in 1921; and the increase in-crease in 1929 was 47 per cent over 1928. While in 1921 gasoline taxes amounted to $4,700,000 last year they reached the amazing total of $449,731,400 according to reports re-ports from 35 states to the American Ameri-can Petroleum Institute and estimates esti-mates from 13 states. In a number of states the gasoline gaso-line tax increased almost 100 per cent last year and in none did it decrease. Gasoline is taxed in every state iu the union with taxes ranging from two to six cents a gallon, or from 18 to 33 per cent of the retail re-tail price. This is believed to be the largest direct sales tax imposed im-posed on any commodity.
