Show EDITORIAL Election Apathy Summit County Clerk Reed Pace recently observed that the voter turnout in Park City for the primary election was the smallest he has ever witnessed. On the other hand, we continue to hear complaints about the insensitivity of county government to the needs and problems of our area. If people in Park City sincerely believe that this part of the county is not adequately represented, there is one obvious way to correct that. By electing someone who will speak to our needs. If the primary turnout is any indication, most Park City residents don't seem to care who represents them in the county commission. Meanwhile, in the Kamas and Coalville areas, voters turned out in large numbers. There were more than twice as many votes cast for Young and Leavitt as there were for Koleman and Stevens, although the Park City-Parley's Park area contains about half of the county's population. It is no wonder that we don't have an adequate voice in county government. Were it not for the tradition of electing one commissioner from each part of the county, we probably wouldn't have a voice at all. |
