Show Getting a Scholarship One of the best friends a college student can have is a scholarship. And those interested high school seniors should be getting busy on their applications. Utah colleges have deadlines for accepting scholarship applications. applica-tions. Some (Utah State University, University of Utah, Weber State and Westminster) will accept scholarship applications until Feb. 1. Other institutions such as Brigham Young University, Southern Utah State College, Snow, College of Eastern Utah and the two Utah Technical Colleges, have later 'deadlines. The two best sources of information on scholarships are the colleges themselves and high school counselors. High schools have "Utah College Days" during which representatives of the higher education institutions come to answer the questions of seniors. Usually, a school will arrange the schedule so that each senior has the opportunity to visit with several college representatives. They are usually well informed on scholarships, and often they have literature concerning various var-ious scholarship possibilities. College catalogs are also good sources of information. Generally, there are two kinds of scholarships. One is the academic scholarship for students who achieve well in their studies. The other is the "talent" scholarship for students who have special skills in such things as music, drama or athletics. Grants and loans are also available to capable students who can not attend college without financial assistance. Parents are often asked to complete confidential confiden-tial statements to help colleges determine students' need. Anyway, now's the time to get started. Deadlines are looming. |
