In this class John would learn about Park City's Land Manage-. Manage-. ment Laws with a simulated city that the students could use to finance and manage real estate, John didn't know : much about this subject, so he didn't pass. , . When the next class became available, John decided de-cided to try again. He thought he could relate the Arts to movie making. With professionals from Ballet West,; The Utah Opera Company, Utah Symphony and Kimball Arts Center coming to talk to the class, it couldn't hurt to try it. Again he didn't know enough, so he didn't pass. ; , . . , , . After he heard the . next class was Science, he made sure he knew something about; it. Sure enough he passed. When the quarter was over John had learned about meteorology, in which the class set up a weather station with the help of the N.S. Weather. Bureau. Then he studied geology witlu mining and physical geography geo-graphy these helped him understand the structure of the earth. When thev were through, the ; class studied the invisible world. It involved involv-ed looking at microscopic animals, which fascinated John. The next subject was ' on anatomy and physiology, which included Park Citv's own doctors coming to speak to the class. : John had learned so much about things he didn't even fcnow.existed that he felt very lucky he could be a part of this. With 'the Gifted and Talented Granti the help of the entire staff and participation participa-tion of every student;' this program can and will work. They are busy ans- -wering the phone, taking messages, and making out receipts for all the students; These hands belong to the : new' secretary, Mrs. Donna Keller: vl?r Mrs. Keller was born in Utah: and graduated from Olympus High School. Her husband Larry. : is a circuit court judge, and her daughter daught-er Jackie, who also attends the Middle School, is in 7th grade: Mrs. Keller has a dog named Lakota. two cats, one named Snowshoe and the other named Snowflake, and a horse named Misty Her favorite season in Park City ' is summer. She likes to play football and ' go camping. When she was asked about a . special hobby. Mrs. Keller's reply was "horseback ( rid- - Mrs; Keller moved to Park City about five years; ago from Salt Lake. Since then she' has worked at Mt. Air n3tmbp t Teachers Galore by Marlene Murnin This year in the middle ' school there are several new teachers. One. of the new teachers is Mr. Johnson. He teaches economics, history, geography, culturesand he also coaches the Junior Varsity Football Team at the high school. Mrl Johnson applied for several teaching : jobs in the weeks and says jobs in the west , and was hired here in Park . City.- He J has been here for three weeks and says he's enjoying it. He hopes to Improve, his skiing now that he lives in a resort town. , V . 4 Mr. Johnson was born in Minnesota. When he was a young boy he worked with his grandfather on the farm. His favorite animals were ' sheep. He now has a dog named Egore. 1 , : , t In :theL summer " Mr. Johnson spends his time . guiding : canoe; trips in Ontario,- Canada; He said that the most terrifying thing that has happened to' him - was when he was camping one time, he went for a walk and came face to face with a black bean Of course, he turned around and ran, not looking back, he had no idea if the bear was following him or hot. - Mr. Johnson likes to travel a lot. V:x ' I EI3 Mac Attack by Lisa Hendricks It was my first day at Carl Viniers Middle School, while waiting for second period to start, what teacher should walk in but my Math Teacher from last year, Mrs. ' Mac. She took one look at me and said "Lisa spit out your Mrs. McClelland, Mrs. Mac as we call her, teaches 7th and 8th grade Math and Home Economics. She. taught tau-ght in Michigan for one year after 'she, graduated from Michigan State : University. Last' year she taught at North Summit in Coalville. She likes to work with 7th and 8th graders. She has been living here for one and one half - years and is now getting to teach here in Park City. Mrs. Mac was born .(February 24, 1956. Her hobbies all include having fun. Some of them are golf, r tennis, and of course skiing. Her favorite foods are Chinese and Italian: Ker favorite color is yellow. Mrc. Mar t a sweet, kind Carl Winters Middle School. We hope everyone will enjoy the 80-81 school year. Let's make it a good one! ! The Gifted and Talented Program by Chris Elkins John Smitty has just arrived at the middle school. He is full of anticipation as he takes a test to find out if he's qualified for the Gifted and Talented Program. The first quarter program will be Mass Media Com-; munication. It will include; Journalism, which will give the students a chance to learn all aspects ot journal-; ism and see how a newspap-f er is run. It will also involve' radio and cinema. Radio will give the students a chance to work in. a radio show themselves, later a radio: club .will be developed. ; Although each of these are exciting, John likes Cinema better. He likes Cinema better because it will help him in writing scripts, editing the final copy and everything about making; movies.. John paid close attention, so the next movie - he made wouldn't be as bad, as his last. The quarter passed by too ' quickly in John's opinion, but he had found out there was more to movies than a camera and a script. He decided to try and get into and an understanding teach- .. er. She is concerned about your opinions on different things. We hope that she, stays here and enjoys her time at Carl Winters Middle School. We have a new 5th grade teacher. Her . name is Mrs. Karen Howard. She just moved to Park City from Nebraska . Mrs. Howard is married. Jms three boys: and a big dog named Olv. She moved to Park City because it is a neat, fun ski town. Some of the things she enjoys doing are running, playing tennis, and of course, skiing. Mrs, 'Howard has 30 students in her class. She really enjoys teaching ' and ; livine in Park Citv. We welcome you, Mrs. Howard, and allot' the new teachers to belongs to a gourmet club. The last movie she saw was In Sesrch cf Ncsh't Ark and she thoroughly enjoyed it. Vicki has had an interesting fantasy too. She has always wanted to learn to fly a plane. Vicki has two children. Robin 9, and Jamie 5. Robin was born : on May 24 and Jamie on May .26. She was born on December 4 in Northern Iowa and her husband David, who is a Professor at the University of Utah. On August 16 in Lowell. Massachusetts. She has two dogs. Puddles and Spunky who are both "very old.V Fatratop it Variety Store, and last year she was the secretary at the Marsac Elementary School. Mrs. Keller really enjoys living in Park City, and she says that she will stay here for the rest of her life. She has only good things to say about Park City's school system, and her job. which mostly deals with office duties and receptionist work. Her opinion of the students is that, they are just altogether great! This year we have many new teachers at the Middle v School. The seventh and ; eighth graders have a special new teacher and her name is Linda Peterson; Miss Peter-v son grew up in Midland. Michigan before she moved to Park City. Utah. She has a Siamese cat. - Her favorite hobbies are running, raquet ball, music. Her favorite color is brown. She has one sister and is not married. . Miss Peterson , chose to teach in Park City because she likes the small compact area. If she were not . teaching, she would go back to college. She taught in Midland. Michigan. . Miss Peterson is very interested in science. The starting of the year has gone great. She loves Park City and the students. She seems to like the school and its surroundings. Miss Peterson Mrs. Worley s favorite color is . blue, her lucky number is two and her favorite food is asparagus. Mrs. Worley is an active volunteer in the AFS (American (Ameri-can Field " Service) student exchange program and is planning an exciting year ahead for her and' her students. Of the many things that she will be doing in. her literature class, one is reading JRR Tolkien's book TteLcrdcftheCUi. Its New Art Teseher by David F.IssFfezhtsa - Carl Winters Middle School Scho-ol has a new art teacher this year. Her name is Deborah Lynn Palek. She was born and raised in Sharon, Pennsylvania Penn-sylvania and married in Indiana. She graduated from Indiana University in 1979. She moved out here July 4, 1980 because she always wanted to live here and she also has family out here. Mrs. Palek used to live in Indiana. Pennsylvania which is just outside of Pittsburgh; She loves to ski. and draw on her free time. Her favorite classes to teach are the 7th and 8th grade art classes. She says that there are a lot of things that these students haven't learned yet. In Indiana she and her husband had a ski shop called Four Seasons Ski Shop. She also has interests in music, drama, and dance. She also has many interests such as cooking, needlepoint and reading. She also enjoys tennis and skiing. City. Although she has done student teaching, this is her first professional job. Cheryl Perry went i to the La Brea tarpits in Los' Angeles. She also visited Knotts Berry Farm and i Catalina Island. After a great vacation for both of them, they flew home. It's real hard to ' make the change from Drivate to public School: A For; example differentjules are enforced here; dress codes aren't enforced here!- The kids up here in. -Park City are more sports oriented than the students that attend Rowland Hall. St. Marks in Salt; Lake. There's, a;lot- of new changes', fof one moving from a large cityto a small city. There's areals'a other differences fdr example; 'no polutiorft not as many' people peop-le or cars, and noise, -Park ,Gity appears to be more competitive in sports than Rowland Hall. Rowland Hall is more competitive academically. academ-ically. The teachers in my previous school, majnty ;only cared about schooj, home-wprk,, home-wprk,, and studying for.tests.
