Historic Sites Division, Wisconsin Wis-consin State Historical Society, told the group that each historical his-torical site, whether an individual in-dividual exhibit or a house, had to have some story, This story and its interpretation, interpre-tation, he added, depend upon the type and age of the visitors and the tourists' motivation and ability of comprehension. Before visiting a historical site, some sort of orientation should be held. "Tell what you are, how you got here, how you came to be, etc." Mr. Sivesind said. "Get the people involved. Make them feel a part of the presentation. The story of a site can be told, he continued, by using labels, electronic devices, guidebooks and guides. He also told the representatives representa-tives from Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado to use the historical areas for different dif-ferent kinds of activities. "If attendance is down on a certain day, for example, schedule specific events such as, craft shows, old-fashioned icecream social, outdoor picnic," the speaker explained. "Get people involved." He said the effectiveness of a historical site increases as one moves away from interpretation inter-pretation by listening to interpretation inter-pretation by doing. |
