All-Out Assaull by Park Ruggers Fails To Break Utah Slate Jinx with another try from a line-out late in the game. Though they missed the kick, USU had wrapped up a 16-6 victory. This coming Saturday afternoon-May 13 at 2 o'clock, the Park Ruggers will take to the home turf once more; this time against the tough B-Squad of . BYU. Park City recently defeated this hard-nosed side in the King of the Mountain Tourney at Provo, 10-4. Last Autumn the B's grabbed a close one, 4-0, from Park City. So the past leads up to this encounter, a tight hard-hitting battle to settle who's best. That's Saturday, 2 p.m. at the community field. Dave Mueller. Once again Utah State proved stubborn against the all-out assault as-sault of Park City Rugby Football Foot-ball Club, coming from behind to hand the locals a loss in their home opener. This leaves USU two wins and a tie in competition with Park City, all three games tight, hard-fought contests. The opening minutes of the game proved a stand-off, each team's offensive efforts thwarted thwart-ed before seeing a fraction of a foot of daylight. But Park City scrum half Craigger Judd kept feeding the ball to his tough forward pack, a tactic which kept gaining steady yardage1. The boys up-front finally capitalized cap-italized on some sloppy ball handling by the visitors, recovering re-covering the pigskin near .the USU goal line and mauling Prop Mike Jones over for the first score of the game. Ron Cotler converted the kick (2 points) after the try (touchdown, 4pts.) and Park City had the lead, 6-0. 6-0. It appeared the Park Ruggers were on their way to breaking the USU jinx. But the game suddenly turned around when the Utah State winger, trapped deep in hisown territory, got off a terrific 70-yard 70-yard rick-for-touch (out of bounds), which set up a line-out line-out on Park City's seven yard line. The Blue quickly took advantage advan-tage of the break, sending the ball in long off the line-out and niftily passing to find pay-dirt. Hoggar Hanssen tied the score for USU with his successful suc-cessful conversion kick. The visitors shocked the home team with another longdistance long-distance strike just before half-time. half-time. The USU Standoff (second man in the backfield wing) faked a pass out to his left and kept the ball on the inside to daylight, breaking FullbackCotler'sdes-peration FullbackCotler'sdes-peration tackle and waltzing home on a run of 45 yards. Score at halftime: USU 12, Park City 6. The second half was a wide-open wide-open affair, Park City narrowly missing several scoring chances close to the opponent's goal in a come-back bid of their own. State clinched the contest |
