Show business very long. IftheGPCC is willing to give discounts at all I think it should be appreciated ap-preciated and not expected. As far as wages go, it seems as though nobody ever gets paid enough. I don't know all the ins and outs of the wage structure set up by the GPCC, but I would suspect most employees get paid fairly for what they do. If some particular person isn't getting paid as much as he would like, he can either quit and get another job elsewhere, or compete com-pete witli everybody else according ac-cording to his ability and qualifications qual-ifications for a better position with the company. 1 realize that there aren't too many other places for employment em-ployment in town, but the above still applies, and as far as that goes, the jobs that are provided, meager as they may seem to some, are available because the resort is here. If GPCC was not here, neither would the jobs lie here. As for the lodging situation, I think it is fair and just compensation com-pensation for the resort to charge a handling fee for reservation res-ervation service to other chalets in town. If I were a lodge owner though, instead of letting my competition handle my reservations, I'd look into doing it myself. If the present situation is not satisfactory then why don't the lodge owners organize under the Chamber of Commerce. A good strong Chamber of Commerce Com-merce can do more good and exert more influence for the lodge owners than can the GPCC. It seems rather stupid to let your competition run half your business. Mr. Bieker contradicts himself him-self as to the life and death of the town's shops, most of which are on Main Street, by saying that 'the town's" shops will be the next to go down" and then turning around and saying in so many words that the reason people come to Park City is because of its uniqueness. If people come to Park City because it is unique, it certainly certain-ly is not going to be "the next to go down" no matter what the CPCC does. Park City is unique, this I agree, and that is one of the reasons why people do come here. Main Street has a special charm all its own. The worst thing property owners on Main Street can do is take a fatalistic fatalis-tic attitude as to ttie future of the street and its vitality as a business district. If everybody takes a defeatist attitude I wouldn't doubt that that is exactly what will happen. Cn the other hand, if everybody every-body on MainStreet could somehow some-how work together for its betterment, then I'm sure it will succeed. I haven't had any discussions with Mr. King as to the GPCC attitude toward Main Street, but I would hope that they would recognize the importance of the rest of Park City as a distinct drawing card which can compliment com-pliment its own goals, and vice versa. I have no reason to doubt that this is how they feel. They, too, own property all over town and on MainStreet. To have the rest of the town be 'the next to go" doesn't make sense from anybody's point of view, be it GPCC or the individual. The reason I have taken the tjme to rebut Mr. Bieker's letter is not because I support the GPCC in what they are doing, do-ing, but because I feel that his comments were unfair and reflect re-flect an attitude that is all too common these days. "Let's get something for nothing." Well, maybe more people should stop expecting something for noth- . ing, stop grumbling and start working for what they want in town. (Signed) John C. Sharp, Jr. EDITORIAL COMMENT: It is apparent that Mr. Sharp is not aware of the activities of the Lodging Association. This group has plans in the works for its own Reservations Center. It seems a little unjust that the GPCC should continually become be-come the whipping boy for blunders and wrong-doings that we the townsfolk have control over through the city council. First of all, any project which the GPCC undertakes has to pass through the planning commission com-mission and the city council, just like all other businesses in town. In short, we have control con-trol over what they do. If the GPCC is changing this town against the wishes of the majority of the people, or violating the ordinances and guidelines set forth by the governing gov-erning bodies of this town then I suggest we need better enforcement en-forcement or a new city government gov-ernment that will stand up to the pressure, to our rights, and to our desires as to the destiny des-tiny of Park City. Second, I think it's a little presumptuous for any person in this town to expect favors from a business, including the GPCC. It's no more fair to expect favors of them than it is to expect favors of any other business in town. Most businesses do not operate op-erate on a margin of profit that will allow them to give too many things away. Anybody who has operated a business can readily agree that you don't give things away and stay in |
