This year's Labor Day celebration was a tremendous tremend-ous success. The festivities were sponsored spon-sored by Park City Corporation, Corpora-tion, Greater Park City Corporation, and Park City Ventures. Hundreds of others gave much help and as a result this year was better than ever. Those of you who made it to the sunrise salute had an ear-shattering treat despite the cool morning air (near 40 degrees). After the salute there was a delicious boarding house breakfast at the park. The food served was similar sim-ilar to what you would have gotten at a Park City Boarding Board-ing house around the turn of th.f contury. After the last eggs were gobbled up, the crowd headed head-ed for Main Street and the big parade. Particular highlights high-lights were the bands. There was the North Summit Sum-mit HighSchoolband.theSalt Lake Post Office band and the Scottish Marching Bagpipers. Bag-pipers. The floats were equally fabulous. The covered wagon sponsored spon-sored by the Main Street Merchants made its debut. This wagon will sit permanently perm-anently in Park City and will be taken to various parades and festivals around the state. The Park City HighSchool drill team did a fine job. For those of you who missed them in the parade you'll be seeing more of them at the Miner's football games. Next is was back to the Park for races, sawdust scramble and water ballon-ing, ballon-ing, the games provided fun for one and all, even the older people participated. The laughter could probably have been heard clear up at the "Number Three." Just when people began to settle down after the games, three men of the Alta Sky-diver's Sky-diver's Club came floating through the air suspended by colorful parachutes to make a three-point landing in the middle of the park. By this time the weather was warming up and beer sales began to pick up as people carried out the old time tradition of anti-labor on Labor Day. The last two events, rock drilling and mucking are perhaps everyone's favorite. These events have been held for years and give the sometimes some-times swollen-headed miners min-ers a chance to show everyone every-one their stuff. Rock drilling is a common occurance up at the mine and has been for years. Everyone is always bragging that they are the fastest and every Labor Day they get a chance to prove it. It is a timed event where a miner must pick up the 75 pound drill from a point behind be-hind a line, carry it up to a big slab of granite and proceed to drill. Once the drilll is a given distance into the rock a flag is dropped and the time marked. This year's third place winner was Larry Boyd, who incidently was one of the sky divers. Larry managed to sink the hole in a fine time of one minute 47 seconds. In second place was Mike McNeil who drove his hole in one minute 21 seconds. The winner of the rock-drilling rock-drilling was none other than Rich Martinez, the foreman at Ontario Number Three. Rich has won this event more times than you can count. You don't get to be mine foreman for nothin' you know. The last event was mucking, muck-ing, which is another event very fam iliar to miners. Mucking is one of the dirtiest dirt-iest jobs in the mine. The contest involves running run-ning a mucking machine. The man who fills up a mine car with ore in the fastest time is the winner. - , ... .; C " ' - . i ; ' . 'u --''1'' " . " ft- ' - . -il k ' ' . ,r. r - w..:: j " 1 .. ........... .J ..... Ken Richardson running a Mucking Machine. The Mucking contest was called a draw when the machine broke. The fastest time recorded record-ed was that of Gary Ryan who filled the car in 57.2 seconds. Ken Richardson scored a fine 1:07, Mike McNeil was sitting third with a time of 1:29. Then Rock Drill winner Rich Martinez stepped up to the mucking machine and the darn thing broke. They tried for half an hour to get it running with no luck. The contest was called unofficial un-official and the entry fees returned. re-turned. The flower show sponsored sponsor-ed by the Women's Athenaeum Athen-aeum of Park City at the Memorial Building was quite refreshing and a nice break from the sun at the park. After taking in the flower show everyone was pretty much on their own to spend the remaining hours of the Labor Day weekend as they chose. |
