Show Daddy got out and tightened the brakes (those were the days!), and he said afterwards that it was metal on metal. Anyway, we continued on down the mountainside at a snail's pace and coasted into a little town that had a banner strung . across the main street that said "BRAKES RE-LINED HERE with an arrow pointing to a garage. gar-age. (It turned out this was one of the most thriving businesses in town!) INQUIRY LED to the information in-formation that our car was fifth in line and we could have it the following morning at ten o' clock. The garage attendant recommended recom-mended the Inn and we were assigned a beautiful room with a babbling brook outside the windows. win-dows. The beds were comfortable, comfort-able, the food in the dining room excellent and the people the friendliest ever. In fact, it was such an in-joyable in-joyable stay that for several years after that, each time we would make the trip from New York to Michigan, we always made it a point to plan to stay at The Inn in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania! Bits & Pieces Bv Eleanor Bennett I PROMISED you another Model T story so here it is. Mother, Daddy and I were making a trip from Mount Vernon, Ver-non, New York, to Kalamazoo, Michigan, to visit my grandmother. grand-mother. We had a Model T and this was before any of the freeways or super highways were built. Believe it or not, it took 5 days to make the trip; that was when cars travelled about 35 miles per hour over roads that were two lane and usually hard gravel. We had stayed inHarrisburg, Pennsylvania, the first night and started out the next day right after breakfast. The road led over the Pocono Mountains a part of the Allegheny range (to folks around Park City they'd be classed as 'hills" but to a Model T, believe me, 3,000feet was a mountain.) Mount Tuscarora was the tallest peak, I guess, and the road went right over the summit. sum-mit. At the top there was a nice place to stop; sort of a towerlike tower-like structure you could climb for viewing, a lunch room and souvenirs for sale. The view WAS lovely we could see for miles in all directions. It was summer time and all was green. A Forest Ranger was thereto explain what we were seeing and soon it was time to drive down the other side. EVERY CAR needed water in the radiator after the climb, so ready we were. The road was in good condition and not too curvy. Daddy was driving and Mother and I were in the back seat. We sped on our way, exclaiming over the lovely scenery. "Ooooh, Daddy, look how far you can see!" I said and upon receiving no reply, I repeated my comment. When I again got no answer, it appeared appear-ed that something was wrong. I was much too little to know, but the brakes had burned out and we were gaining momentum fast! The Model T had three floor pedals and none of them did any good! Fortunately traffic was almost al-most non-existant so Daddy swerved from one side of the road to the other gaining speed each moment. HE EVIDENTLY looked well ahead and saw a large pile of gravel at the side of the road. He warned Mother to brace herself and to grab ahold of me and he plowed the nose of that little Model T square into that gravel! We stopped with a thud! No damage and no one hurt. |
