Show Rec Recently Remodeled One of Utah's Most Beautiful ful Chapels Is Gutted By Mae Bates I November 17 1958 will go down downIn In the history of Wanship as ns a n aday aday day of great groot sorrow and disappointment disappointment disappointment The Ward church of f the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Latter Saints burned to the ground Flames were believed to have started in the furnace room or from stored slack coal While there is Insurance on the buildIng building building build build- I ing ward church officials are not notI I I certain of the actual loss Certainly Certainly the sentimental loss In n the I beloved community center can never be repaid Goes Up In Flames FlamM It was in the early morning hours Monday that Paul Pace son of Mr and Mrs Henry Pace I noticed smoke and flames coming coming com com- ing from the church house He notified Bishop Wm Reed Judd and the rest of the community was aroused Soon they were nil all at the scene of the fire hoping to be in time to salvage some some- of the c cherished valuables valuable In the I b building I However by this time It is It was unsafe for any anyone one to enter the structure Both the Coalville and Kamas fire departments arrived to aid ld and though they worked diligently diligent diligent- ly their efforts to stem the blaze proved fruitless Some Items Saved An addition to the building on the northwest side of the church was last to be gutted and through the efforts of the visiting fire de departments departments departments de- de and several hardy Wanship souls some items were removed from this annex Some bathroom fixtures a filing cabI cabinet cabinet cab cab- I inet from the Bishops Bishop's room and andI several items from the store room I were safely removed I Included In the loss was fc a magnificent magnificent mag mag- quilt in the Relief Society Society Society So So- room by Mrs Alice Allce Young it was more than half completed Darned Burned Hammond Organ Ollan Just six years yean ago plans for foran foran foran an extensive remodeling campaign cam carn were Inaugurated under the direction of Bishop Harvey Pace and continued under the present Bishop Wm Reed Judd During this period a new Hammond organ was placed In the chapel Beautiful carpeting carpeting carpet carpet- ing drapes and chairs chain were purchased purchased purchased pur pur- chased Endless hours of labor by members of the ward made this one of the loveliest chapels to be seen in a smaller ward anywhere anywhere anywhere any any- where In Utah The Relief Society members were proud too of their meeting place which had just been remodeled remodeled and boasted d beautiful new carpeting and drapes An elaborate public address system had been installed just a afew afew a afew few years ago Although the Wan shIp Ward church was date up-to-date in convenience convenience convenience conven conven- and decoration It boasts an Interesting history The Th pioneers who settled In held their first services It Ir their homes then In Inthe Inthe inthe the log school house Later the Jit tittle tie rock ck school house was use used as a chapel until the church was completed Completed In 1890 Started In 1887 the building was Constructed by George Dunford Dun Dun- ford S Stephen phen Nixon did the woodwork The brick was made by Andrew Peterson and his children George and Eliza from clay clay taken from the surrounding hills Cost of the completed chapel was It was dedicated on January 12 13 1890 by y Apostle Franklin FrankU D ds Then as now all nil social life of the ward members was centered around the church Mrs Hazel Streets re recalls al one of their main forms of recreation in the earlier days was to hold Home Dramatic plays in the recreation hall At present plans are being made by ward members to continue holding Primary and Relief Society Society Society So So- In the homes and undoubtedly undoubtedly undoubtedly edly plans will be made very soon I for tor construction of a new chapel I |
