himself It Is simply constructed of two small flat squares of plastic plastic plastic plas plas- tic with a tiny piece of grass auto shim in between them to serve asa as asa asa a reed I killed two coyotes in one day using this little device Beldon Deldon says On one occasion I was riding near St St. George when I came into a promising area I tied my horse behind a cedar and carefully took cover In some thick brush brus Td rd blown the call but three short blasts when I could se see the coyote COote coming winding his way hastily down through the t-he cedars Hed He'd worked his way to within twenty twenty- five yards when he spotted my dog raised his e ears ears ri and stopped abruptly I shot himOn himOn him On another occasion I was hiding in a wash blowing In a coyote and watching him move I towards me Suddenly another one orte loomed up on the high bank directly behind me I was so surprised surprised sur sur- prise that both of them escaped es as- taped untouched Believe me when within 12 feet foot with one of the calling contrivances Another Utah trapper Jim Worthen reported the following in a letter to the State Fish and Wildlife Service Division of Predator and Rodent Control and it was printed in their May 1956 issue of the publication The Utah Trail On April 23 1956 I was den hunting on turn Pasture point I circled an area on my horse and found a concentration of coyote tracks leading into a small canyon canyon can can- yon thus indicating a den I got gotoff gotoff I off my horse tied him up and sneaked out onto the rim of the I canyon hoping to get a shot at atthe atthe atthe the old female coyote The canyon canon was only about a hundred yards deep quite ste steep p and brushy on the side aide I IWas Iwas was on but quite open In the bottom and on the other side aide making chances for a shot ahot pretty pretty pret ty good I got lot where I could I M ee e e the largest area arpa of the canyon canyon can yon on and tat sat down I I sat and wa watched witched ched for a while and decided I would try calling the old female out to me by squealing like a rabbit in distress While I dont don't profess to be the best imitator there is I must have done pretty good on the first try because I Just barely got the call out when out of the brush directly below me came the old female coyote She was only eight paces away when I first saw her and she was coming on a run with her mouth open As I threw up the gun the thought flashed across my mind mindI that she would probably turn and I get away from there as fast as she could when she saw me move but when she saw me she came all aU the faster I When Then I got the gun up all aU I could see through the scope was waa just a blur and I thought she had turned aside so 80 I lowered the gun for a look when she jumped on me I 1 just had bad time timeto timeto timeto to throw up my right arm to keep her away from my face and she grabbed grubbed it between the wrist and elbow The side hill hili was steep and I twisted toward her going down the hill with her underneath About that time she decided I wasn't a rabbit and squirmed loose and took off down the hill I still had the rifle In my left hand and andI I got off a shot still sitting on the ground from the waist I II II II I didn't have time to aim and I saw her left hind leg fly over her back The brush and trees were quite thick where she went and I didn't get to see her again but I trailed I her a little way and found blood I and some of her Insides It was WM getting late and I 7 couldn't trail her In the thick brush and edgy country The bullet was a grain 30 OC bronze point wad oad I figured it exploded when It hit hither hither hither her leg and opened up her Insides I went back bock and found the den with 1 the pups In a small maU It ledge dge just 15 U steps below where I flint first wit sat down I figure the old coyote was so 80 intent on getting a free meal so clo close e to h heme mo moshe she never bad had time tune to change her mind salad after alter she saw laW me still thinking I was waa a rabbit At any rate I 1 got five pups out of the den and the biggest thrill of my life also quite a ascare ascare ascare scare The only injury suffered by me was a scratch on my hand when I jerked my arm out of her mouth I luckily had hadon on a heavy denim jacket and her bM fang teeth closed completely over my arm ann I believe the next time I try call call- old female coyote at the den I will use a 12 gauge shotgun and be wide awake James A A.
