Show Electing Presidents Some ten states In the Far FarNest West Vest and Midwest have already petitioned Congress in favor of an amendment to the Constitution tion which would change the method of electing a President Thus it seems after many years of discussion that the Constitution is likely to be changed in the relatively near future t r TWO PROPOSALS seem to have the greatest support One would put Presidential elections on a direct popular vote basis Another would provide that the states retain electoral votes but they be divided in exact proportion tion to the popular vote in the state Those in favor of a popular vote argue that this is the most democratic method by which to choose the nations nation's chief tive Those favoring retention of the electoral vote believe the provision for electoral votes established in the Constitution I should not be altogether abol abol- fished SUPPORTERS OF both agree that the present system which has allowed Presidents with fewer votes than their opponents to win needs modification The present system requires all of ofa a states state's electoral votes to be cast for the candidate who wins a majority of or the electoral votes Thus votes for the loser do not count For 25 years there has been active agitation for reform in inthe inthe inthe the system and it now appears some amendment to the Constitution Constitution Constitution will be enacted in the too not-too-distant f future ture which is only fitting in the West's major democracy |
