Show B Bountiful Builds On Ii Beauty Bea Beauty On Sept 27 1847 Sessions moved red with his Ws family about nine miles north of the newly established Mormon l settlement settlement settlement set set- of f Salt Lake City and camped He had traveled beyond the Hot Not Springs to find feed for his flocks and herds HERE HE BUILT a dugout with skins for a roof and wintered He and his family were the sole oc occupants occupants occupants oc- oc of the place until the spring of 1848 Sessions was not left long in seclusion for in the spring and summer newcomers arrived in droves By the end of the year some three score heads of families families families lies were definitely located in inthis inthis inthis this beautiful spot THESE SETTLERS were all Mormons and the most of them claimed English descent A roster roster roster ros ros- ter clearly bears out this thought Call Barlow Hatch Moss Tolman Tolman Tolman Tol- Tol man Holbrook Stoker Pace Though rudely taught themselves themselves themselves them them- selves they believed in tion In the fall of 1848 Anson Call and Joseph Holbrook built a ahouse ahouse ahouse house of bulrushes and clay on the banks of the Jordan River where their children were gi given yen the rudiments of the three Rs R's reading writing and arithmetic by the latter's Tatters wife Hannah IN NOVEMBER NOVEl 1849 at a ward award meeting the people voted to erect a school house John C. C L L. L Smith was hired to teach at 30 per month establishing the second school in Utah The place was first known as Sessions' Sessions Settle Settlement mente However the ecclesiastical design designation a t i ion on was North Canyon Ward both titles being used rather Indiscriminately indiscriminately indiscriminately indis Indis- until 1855 when it was officially named Bountiful THE TOWNSITE had been laid out by Jesse W W. W Fox and the people people people peo peo- wished to have it enclosed asa as asa asa a precaution against hostile In In- In They voted in 1855 to build a wall entirely around it This was done The result was an earthwork of mud and straw some three miles in length eight feet high on the outside and four feet thick at the top rather an imposing undertaking for those times Assessments were made according to ability to pay one man being assessed 1100 SETTLERS continued to pour in from the Eastern States and from England They came wi with th ox teams with handcarts and afoot and they were welcomed with that hearty spirit of brotherhood that 1 only the pioneer knows how to display Increased population demanded larger places of worship so the foundation of the Bountiful Tabernacle Tabernacle Tabernacle Taber Taber- nacle was laid In 1857 In 1863 the edifice was dedicated b by Heber Heber Heber He- He ber C. C Kimball directed by President Brigham Young MOST MOSi Uh Ur the timber came carne out of Meeting House Hollow in Hol Hol- Holbrook Holbrook brook Canyon and the adobes were made from clay in the Dobe Yard down on the bottoms At the ti time me of its construction this Tabernacle was the finest in the LAS Church No other building in Utah had finer acoustic acoustic acoustic tic properties BY 1890 RESIDENTS of East Bountiful determined that they needed something stronger than precinct government to take care of their increasing population They petitioned the Territorial Legislature and w were re granted a charter to organize a city During the 7 77 7 years since it was organized the city has met every obligation imposed upon it During that time eight elementary elementary elementary elemen elemen- tary schools have been established established established along with three junior and two senior high schools Streets have been cleared of weeds and debris oiled surfaces have supplanted the mud and sidewalks have been laid A water water water wa wa- ter system was begun in 1906 and it if has increased in capacity until it is more than adequate to meet the needs of the entire area In 1907 electric lights came to Bountiful through the efforts of oi its citizens This system was purchased by the cit city which now owns its own plant The first real hard surface road in Utah was laid down between the town and Salt Lake City through the efforts of officials of Bountiful who also were able to induce private property property property prop prop- erty owners to permit the cut through the bluff at the Hot Springs OTHER CITIZENS of t this his flourishing community organized and carried out a campaign to ac acquire acquire ac- ac quire the cemetery and beautify it Now it is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the state Possibly no other place in Utah has grown more rapidly than this city set on the hills between the mountains and the Great Salt Lake Other people have finally discovered that for a dwelling place an ideal spot in which to rear a family it has few equals and is surpassed by none THE RESULT has been homes c Ir It J 0 JJ f 4 H r I Bountiful new swimming pool has ha made po possible ible a year round swimming program Area residents arc bc to take their place among the top swimmers of the state by the hundreds in the last several several several sev sev- eral years modern homes that please the eye and satisfy the de desire desire de- de sire for comfort Homes will surely be built on the topmost terrace of old Lake Bonneville where contented inhabitants can gaze down upon the town and across the shimmering Salt Lake at the famous colorful sunsets Until recent years Bountiful has been a relatively quiet agricultural agricultural agricultural agri agri- cultural c com o m m muni u n nIt i t ty y situated mainly between Highway 91 on the west and the Wasatch Mountains Mountains Mountains Moun Moun- on the east Its proximity mity to Salt Lake City had little effect until population increase made the desirability of Bountiful as a residential area very apparent With the sudden increase In population population pop pap it has become necessary to plan for continued growth along with the services that people need IN PLANNING for these additional additional additional addi addi- people and services the city council is looking forward with the conviction that a master plan will help create not only a larger city but a better city The plan will serve as a guide for future city councils and plannIng planning planning plan plan- ning commissions but it should also be flexible enough to meet changing c Because of Bountiful's unique location its residents enjoy some of the best natural characteristics tics available for residential liv liv- ing The gently sloping hillside makes every home site a view aview lot with an unmatched view of the south end of Davis County with its colorful sunsets beyond the Great Salt Lake THE RESIDENTIAL area is 1 S V. V r M i 1 I s 4 The cit city hall of Bountiful has become a center for or many activities activities ties tics including the South Da Dais Branch Library N away from the busy highways and other noisy elements w which hie h makes for quiet peaceful living The short distance coupled with an excellent road system make it closer in travel time Lake City than even a large portion oi of Salt Lake City residents The short distance from Bountiful Bountiful Boun Boun- to the mountain recreation areas previously made It unnecessary unnecessary unnecessary to develop a lot of playground playground playground play play- ground and park area in the city itself HOWEVER THIS situation is isnow isnow isnow now changing rapidly New parks have been built several more are in the planning and money has been budgeted for their de de- de There is still considerable vacant va vacant vacant va- va cant land within the Bountiful city limits which can be utilized for residential building FORTUNATELY Bountiful has enough water to satisfy the needs of the area Even in 1961 one of the driest years on record the culinary supply alone was sufficient sufficient sufficient to take care of all the irrigation irrigation irrigation gation in addition to the household needs Now the Bountiful ancy District Is receiving Its share of the Weber Basin water for pressure irrigation purposes So the water picture in Bountiful is very rosy EVEN THOUGH growth has been quite rapid in recent years homes are beautiful and well built The fine homes and the high degree of maintenance provided by the owners is an indication that the people are trying to keep Bountiful The City of Beautiful Homes and Gardens On Feb the Bonne View Garden club with Marlene Wood as chairman formed its committee commit commit- tee for the up clean drive in Bountiful Many minded civic-minded school and church leaders joined in the campaign Mrs Wood an announced announced announced an- an the basic goals for Cor the program as follows 1 ELIMINATION of all of the theten theten theten ten most unsightly or objectionable objection objection- able situations in town and then the next ten etc 2 Removal of junk 3 REPAIRING all necessary fences cutting fence posts to uni uniform uniform uniform uni- uni form height and removing fences that are not necessary 4 Cleaning up of vacant lots in town eliminating weeds or trash from vacant lots with a hoe and shovel or by DY spraying wi with th weed chemicals 5 REMOVING all dead trees in town Pruning dead branches from living trees remaining 6 Removing or repairing and painting all dilapidated barns and other buildings 7 REMOVING large stones debris trash and litter from streets and vacant lots 8 Keeping streets free from litter by periodic pick up 9 of trash from Crom trucks and trailers on road to municipal dump areas 10 Spraying of weeds on streets and ditch banks early in the season season season sea sea- son and during the summer be beCore before before be- be fore Core weeds become large 11 11 COVER DITCHES wherever needed especially at street in In- In Obviously the up clean-up drive directly effects the health and safety of our city si simply by eliminating things which could cause a fire hazard down abandoned homes where children may play eliminating filth and debris where mice and rats can collect ON MAR 18 1966 the city council approved wording of a new weed law based on a model ordinance ordinance ordinance nance with some modification Through the hard work of Mrs Marlene Wood and her coworkers work co ers the job was done Many citizens citizens citi citi- zens contacted the city offices to praise the results The majority of the citizens responded very well to the letters and notices sent to them for their help In the drive As a result of the efforts put forth the city is a healthier safer and more attractive place in which to live THE FO FOLLOWING G awards were won in conjunction with this program 1 Utah Community 1966 Beautification Beautification Beau Beau- Award won by Bountiful Class B B.
