because it shall do nobody else good hurting himself and others 0 you may maa like or dislike al smith you may approve or disapprove ot of many of his pet theories but there Is one thing upon which we are all agreed and that Is that be Is not a dog in the manger elat they held an election in new york recently there was some casual balloting elsewhere in the country but without any particular significance except in the eighth michigan district which for I 1 thirty two years has been an unassailable republican stronghold however word comes from new york that as a result I 1 of the campaign in that state the alleged breach between govenor roosevelt and ex governor smith has perceptibly widened it would seem to b be true that smith during the campaign went out ol of bis way to attack the governor first denouncing I 1 noun cing as vicious the amendment in which mr roosevelt was particularly interested and then criticizing the Gove governors mOrs taxation program frank E R kent in the baltimore sun says that no one any longer pretends political hostility does not exist between them 0 0 0 mr kent would seem to base his conclusion upon the statement that stories 1 appear in all the new york papers to that effect rather questionable authority i friends ol of the governor mr kent continues charge that smith and raskob are trying to prevent him from being in g nominated tor for president when men one considers that roosevelt placed smith in nomination for the presidency three times each time drenching him with praise and that smith nominated roosevelt for or governor thus putting hm him in position to be a presidential bax candidate idlet and eulogizing him I 1 in a the highest terms tern during his two campaigns when one considers these things the apparent break without ostensible reason Is an astonishing thing it is the real mystery ot of present day politics 0 As a matter of fact there Is no particular mystery about it smith as titular leader of his party objects possibly with reason to that proverbial Roosevelt lan independence of thought and action mr roosevelt poes possibly ably with just as good a reason objects to being told where and when to get on and get off even by titular leaders fluell furthermore ore there Is no gain saying the tact fact that many outstanding democrats in the business world do not want roosevelt nominated they regard him as a weak man and prefer owen young or newton baker or albert I 1 ritchie nevertheless n nobody ab ody in the know doubts for one m moment that roosevelt will be the demo democratic cratic nominee and the impression continues to prevail that al I 1 smith will make the nominating speech on the floor of the convention they say in new york that Roosevel ts smashing victory in the recent election over intensive smith opposition settles the question a ot at the complexion of the state delegation to the forthcoming convention encouraging as was wall Roosevel ts victory in new york in his fight it Is more than likely that there was imore more encouragement in reports of the sweeping gains made by the democrats in the congressional and gubernatorial elections in the east and middle west insuring democratic control of the house ot of representatives and a victory of landslide proportions in the fight lor for the governorship er ot of new jersey in the five by elections to fill vacancies es in the house a startling overturn occurred r in the eighth district of michigan where michael J hart wet democrat was elected by a majority of over foss 0 eldred his bis dry republican opponent it was the decisive result in that district plus the election of democrats to succeed democrats in the seventh new hew york and twentieth ohio districts that now give the democrats seats in th the house and the th e power p 0 to organize a rg a nize that th at body no matter how the election may go december to fill a further vacancy from the fifth district of new jersey of course everyone here believes that except tor for political pressure herbert hoover would not be a candidate to succeed ee d himself now comes the announcement that his bright prospect for a peaceful even it if he wants it vere ere seriously threatened by the possibility that senator william E B borah oral chairman cb rm a of the powerful senate foreign relations committee may enter the contest with him tor for the republican presidential nomination next year 0 0 it Is said here that this anti hoover threat developed from the fact that i a group of influential republicans from the east and middle west have offered to underwrite boraas campaign it if be will agree to contest the presidents nomination the senator Is reported to have taken the offer under consideration when questioned about it borah would not discuss the subject he neither affirmed nor denied having received the proffer of financial support for such a campaign in any case it going to be smith against hoover maybe it will be roosevelt against borah watch for announcement in this column next july |
