hope that some day they again will return possibly no individual and that includes senators and congressmen stamped a deeper impression upon the minds I 1 t the eight hundred visitors than did alaor A J gibbons Gio bons who as your friend gibbons seems destined to bigger jobs I 1 alter after all tenner former service men and their ladles are pleasure loving in spite of 0 the seriousness of conventions and the joys and recreation found in park city will live long among those legionnaires and auxiliary members mayor gibbons in his powerful eloquent greeting to the two organizations and his own efforts to make everyone feel that park city was theirs stepped into the front ranks of legionnaires as a natural leader park city citizens may not appreciate to what extent their high school representation sen tation the band stood out in the success of the entertainment but there was not a single visitor who saw the red and white be decked musicians on the street t that saturday morning who did not praise those youngsters now had these students made a single appearance they would not have been impressed upon the minds of 0 the guests as indelibly but every morning of the three days and then in the parade well it made every spectator feel that the trip to park city had been just that much more and byron jones their director and the high school girls chorus and the park city women who entertained the legion and the auxiliary appreciated dont think lor for a minute they it seemed though that all park city miss the opportunity to make it a real three days for those from all parts ot of the state the board of education the police and the firemen they all did their part and while the park city legionnaires who make up park city post no 14 and the tha auxiliary unit members know that the business men made this great event a possibility too still all park city can give itself a pat on th the lack eback for it was a grand success AS TO 30 THE conventions both the legion and the auxiliary were addressed in a joint session friday by senators william H king and reed smoot and governor george H dern dem senator king pleaded tor for the restoration of the silver standard he expressed his els confidence that the silver industry will rise again to the prominence it so richly deserves and appealed to all utahna to stand by this enterprise we will keep on fighting said saad sena tor ter king we will keep on with the struggle until this vital question Is settled and settled highly we demand that silver be recognized and the day Is coming when this great mining industry will step forth from its inactivity depression will be continuous unless silver is and placed on an equal basis with gold senator king praised the founders of park city whose foresight and courage made this sliver center a reality the tame fame of park city Is not alone due to the silver industry commented the senator for it holds a distinct place ln in the history of the west because of the legion for the great service to the united states congressman colton said you have helped to keep the balance wheel steady congressman colton advocated the abolishment of 0 the contract system as in vogue in the federal government claiming that the present situation warrants employment of more men and the use of less machinery A waring against the spread of 0 communism throughout america was and to fight this threat of most interest to the legionnaires and the auxiliary members were the tha elections by the two organizations I 1 the legion officers elected were george S ballet ot of provo department commander joseph E nelson of spanish pork fork national committeeman L J holther ot of ogden alternate national committeeman Mit teeman and frank P fisher ot of helper vice commander 1 I 1 the auxiliary chose mrs E E jenkins ot of salt lake department president mrs I 1 george S ballif national committeeman I 1 mrs G 0 D rutledge But ledge ot of first vice president mrs helena mcgarry ot of milford Ml lford second vice president mrs W W allen alien of provo alternate national committeewoman mrs sarah dastrup ot of i provo treasurer mrs bessie barton of J duchesne chaplain and mrs don J I 1 ahlvers ot of ogden historian the legion made plans to relieve the unemployment situation and to aid the distressed families during the coming winter commander ray bay L olsen in his report to the delegates asked that this action be taken 1 the legion reiterated its stand on national defense de lense resolving that the nation should continue Us its preparedness program doth both the child welfare and rehabilitation programs showed considerable expansion mansion during the year legion committees reported the park city post won the arthur woolley trophy and the john E booth cup for attaining the highest percentage ot of members during the year legion membership stood at the greatest number in the department history the auxiliary also had the largest membership roll since its organization with 2750 in the ranks under mrs george S ballif department president the past twelve months has been one of the most outstanding in I 1 the auxilia rys history I 1 the child welfare and rehabilitation work throughout the state was commended more activity was shown in these two branches under mrs airs Bal ballias lifs administration than ever before in utah prominent among the events was the gold star mothers tea at the 9 J beggs residence thursday afternoon more than women attended mrs J B boyle a gold star mother of provo recited a tribute to mother with response by mrs airs charles V K saxton of musical numbers were furnished by miss janice dark clark miss AWE katherine clark miss betty sheen and the celeste stringed trio of salt lake members of the park city unit who served were mrs austin J gibbons mrs clements hansen mrs thomas F kearns keams mrs andrew L hurley mrs fraser buck mrs J C conlon mrs airs S H mrs gilbert kimball and mrs T E clark mrs mr mary peterson mrs maude peterson abd mrs rose smith gold star mothers of park city were honored guests the parade on friday was an all outstanding feature of the convention it was waa conceded to have been the best ever presented dented at a legion convention business houses and park city organizations joined generously in making the procession a brilliant success the park city legion committee in charge was composed of fraser buck general chairman J charles conlon secretary M C oconnor J V thompson mayor gibbons and william nell the park city high school band was adjudged the best musical organization and was awarded first prize the thirty eighth infantry band was not in the competition owing to its experience the park city auxiliary won the prize for the best decorated automobile the park city plumbing company was awarded the honor for the most beautiful float FRANK E PETERSON POST appreciative it Is my great pleasure and du duty ty at this time to thank the park city public those business firms fraternal organizations city and county officers the local school board volunteer firemen the sli ver berking King and park utah mines and all others who may have aided in any way in I city last friday from san francisco to participate in the festivities of 0 the american legion convention left for the big california city tuesday afternoon in hla his tiny austin automobile micky enjoyed his brief stay la in hla his former home city meeting with former school mates and old time friends he pa participated in the big parade 0 of last friday night mating making a big lilt hit in his little austin the minature nature ml machine with its not overlarge over large driver attracted much attention and comment as it appeared among the big floats and other big things in that big parade micky alicky will have much to talk about as he meets the many ex Par kites now malting making their home in san francisco where the gentleman with hla his brother jim is conducting a lucrative grocery business giles wood former well known park ito ite now ranching on a large scale over in the uintah basin country was in our city during the legion convention enjoying the big features 0 of sarah dastrup they and mrs amanda banks made up the foursome mr jones ot of the high school and mrs guy mckay and mrs bess brady were the judges PROVO CORPS WINS to make it a perfect day so far as mus musical ical competitions the provo legion narres baires beat blew and drilled their way to first prize in the drum corps competition at the ball park in the evening it was a neat appearing well drilled organization and a credit to the department of utah as well as to the garden city commander J M klapack himself is a member of the corps just as the competition ended the spectators were forced to rush tor for shelter when the skies wept vigorously but the heavy precipitation did not dampen the ardor or the spirit of the thousand persons who crowded the elks hall ball for the 49 dance a feature that lasted until early morning DESERVED FEDERAL PRAISE conduct of members of 0 the american legion who attended the department convention at park city last week was praised by W W mcbride federal prohibition administrator tor for utah in a statement issued monday 1 I desire to commend the good citizens and public officials of park city and the officials of the utah department ot of the american legion tor for the splendid spirit of operation cooperation co exhibited during the convention conditions at park city during the convention in so tar far as violations ot of the national
