Show birthday observed by athenaeum an interesting affair of the week was the he birthday luncheon given on febra sty iry birthday by the womans comans athenaeum caubat their club rooms ooma on main street it was given in lonor honor of birthday and also to 0 commemorate the thirty second birthday ot of the club forty one members c cn n oyed joyed this delightful affair with the long looked tor for sunshine aing in at the windows everything took ook on a rosy hue the long table was entered centered with a birthday cake decorated with alth white frosting and thirty two small red ed candles candies in small holders tau tall red tapers aberg were in silver candle sticks at either end ot of the table cut flowers in tall vases carrying out the idea of the dub club colons colors cherry red and white were placed at various intervals on the table place mace cards and nut cups carried out the same general color scheme and idea of spring the president mrs fred gillette pre aided and acted as toastmistress in a very ery gracious manner following Is the introductory speech of welcome and toasts given mrs gillette fellow club workers the position I 1 find myself in this af hernoon amoon reminds me of a story I 1 once heard an american visiting london found it difficult to get a cup of coffee to his liking the waiter casually remarked as he served the gent gentle lemans maWs breakfast it looks like rein rain sir air it does said the Amr elcan but you know I 1 ordered coffee since you wish a speech perhaps it would be well to tell you before a mistake is made that that la is just what I 1 am delivering each anniversary of the commencement of the athenaeum brings with it the pleasant assurance that we have accomplished complis hed lied something that we have gained influence that we have taken an active part in our problems and that we have benefited by our association with each other but I 1 am ot of the opinion fellow club workers that as this department of the federated wo mans clubs we are capable of greater achievements As the human race ages there seems to be more need of organizations such as ours hands reach out to us for guidance in the literary in the artistic in the musical and in the civic realms it Is our duty to be one of the leading of ill all education since today Is our anniversary this Is the day in which we meet around the festive board to congratulate ourselves and one another on oil what has been accomplished complis hed to in the past years that being the case it would not be amiss to say that february twenty second Is a double day of honor to us organization day and george birthday make it so I 1 do not know that any thing new can be said on either subject ecology has been exhausted in praise of both and both stand out alone in a their own respects george washington in the history of our country the at athenaeum b in the history of our community now it can be more readily un stood why we are capable of great achievements to use the words of our own george washington the eyes of all our countrymen are now on us and we shall have their blessing and crastes pra stes it if happily we are the instruments of assisting them in their paths of the ideal stage of living and cement all common interests into a unity the story of the and growth of the athenaeum is not a theory but a living acting reality fully demonstrated by the work that has been accomplished and the victories won it Is not my intention to throw cold water on an this very pleasant luncheon by making a 96 long tedious speech I 1 will immediately allow you to enjoy the remainder of the program alter after offering you as a volunteer sentiment may the skin of a gooseberry make an umbrella large enough to shelter all our troubles and may the sky of the universe cover our achievements first on the program was a toast very ably delivered by miss catherine evans the athenaeum madam president and ladles ladies it Is indeed quite significant that we come together today to honor two birthdays so to speak one that of the father of our country the other the organization of the womans comans athenaeum the one a leader the other a maker of leaders thirty two years ago today a few enterprising ter women came together after seeing a necessity for such an organization and formed the first dub club which no doubt was a true pioneer even in its infancy the high purposes and ideals were carried out to the fullest extent As time went on and the club grew and new conditions had to be dealt with successfully just as always and just as it shall in the future an organization cannot be very long lived no matter what its underlying principles are it if the attitude of let george po do it Is equivalent not so with us as long as thirty two years progress stand tor for proof athenaeum with all that it embraces Is something of which we all are and should be justly proud the collect alone when given deep conscientious consideration gives back to one a feeling or desire to go ahead and strive tor for the greatness of life it teaches us to overlook pettiness and hold ourselves above trifles being human and imperfect as we all are we of necessity need something lor for a beacon light ligh M As we are women working for women I 1 might state that at a large dinner party given in washington during the time william M evarts was secretary of state a lady sitting next to him said mr evarts dont you think that a woman Is the best judge of other women ah madam he answered she js Is not only the best judge but the best executioner athenaeum harbors none of the latter straight forward and unafraid seems to be the motive power behind all athenaeum activities something Is suggested for the good of the club right away some definite action la Is taken toward that end and unfailing unafraid hands carry it through thus our club has outgrown its baby clothes slid and now holds its place among the others men are ranted ranked by their vision in a very real sense the vision makes the man it gives him his reach and his power powei one man sees nothing new in the materials of life iffe and work and he be comes one of the worlds drones another 17 man sees an engine in a kettle a new language in the clouds an angel in marbel a heroin a child a people in B I 1 continued on page seven athenaeum observes thirty second birthday continued from pogo one multitude and he becomes an inventor an artist a prophet a statesman then followed a solo in A little dream house by mrs lire kate savage which was heartily enjoyed by all this song was followed by a clever clerc x toast by alles evelyn tuggle to women the first woman who if the legend Is true was only a side issue first came mar man after him came woman and she ehe has been after him ever since be to her virtues very kind be to her faults a little blind the women that accomplish things and have a through knowledge of their own work and a general understanding of their competing sisters endeavors are not creatures of circumstance but surely are of gods elect the races that are tardy as to civilization hold bold interior inferior to men but as civilization progresses it Is recognized that tor for our nations support and betterment ter ment women as well as men must shoulder responsibility now much has been said of women and their incessant talking but think was it not women who spoke and spoke well that made the most converts to christianity we know that the missionary movement in china japan and india utterly failed until women who could speak persuasively were sent much of the work accomplished by the salvation army Is done by women and their leader in our country Is a woman just who are the women of influence in our country today are they not those that can speak and speak well lecturers social workers teachers and those engaged in professional and business enterprises terp rises and the coming women of tomorrow are those that can speak with certainty and power their innermost convictions vict ions lons help solve national problems and give messages to the world that will ring throughout the centuries so heres to the women omen who are arc slender heres to the women who are tender heres to the women who will not be led heres to the women who have married heres to the women who have tarried heres to the women who are speechless but they are dead mrs then charmed her hearers by her beautiful rendition ol of the spring song with variations mrs jackson then reread re read her philosophy of life which was truly enjoyed and follows my philosophy ot of life life Is just the thing we make I 1 it t whether rough or whether smooth in this journey we are branded I 1 As we travel onward through some have trials and tribulations others have their joys galore but lets take the road straightest never leap or jump before in my life ive met with hardships troubles too of many kinds but the road Is just a rough one in all other lives well find I 1 have had joy mixed with sorrow laughter with my falling tears but I 1 always look tor for sunshine on the morrow that will banish all my fears yes I 1 want to enjoy the sweetness of my life in every way and in order to do it I 1 must do kind acts each day help the poor the lowly needy not the rich that have the wealth they may be just discontented and a little poor in health my life Is just what I 1 make it no one else Is to blame it if I 1 cannot find my pleasure if I 1 seek tor for faults and shame you tou can give me pleasure it if you give one little smile it will help me with one treasure that will comfort for a while give the same smile to others that they may have the pleasure too let them store it with their treasure it Is something you wont rue let each person have their motto let each one have their will his ways and thoughts may count for something that will aid you climb the hill I 1 am just a small wee number on this crowded universe I 1 cant have all the pleasures I 1 cant think of myself first arst let us then consider others that they must live and thrive along lift the burdens of our brothers give them all a cheerful song so I 1 will try my best to be cheerful in my life of every day so 80 that when life seems tearful fearful we will cast that fear away there are knockers there are boosters boasters bo you can find them everywhere take them size them look them over dont give up in great despair I 1 lif life e Is real and life Is with us till til we cease our work to do dont give up the life too easy there Is something all can do LAVINA M JACKSON mrs L A bridgland a member of the university womans comans club and a former high school instructor in our local school was the distinguished guest at the luncheon the next number was a duet recompense by caro anro roma sung by deal J hartwell and lousene Loul sene nimmo in theme it was very similar to the preceding toast and was very well received and enjoyed by the ladles ladies present mrs wheeler then gave a very concise talk on boulder dam giving the MI main points since its inception twenty years ago and developing the thought that the natural site had bad been formed by nature as a fault tor for this said engineering teat feat so many things might be said on this subject that all present wondered that she was able to select the highlights so splendidly her talk follows boulder Boul fler dam today the front pages of 0 our newspapers are full ot of material on the boulder dam controversy one commissioner says one thing another says something different california claims arizona Is trying to hold her up and arizona claims she Is being robbed we read about dams power lines irrigation canals tion and what not until we wonder what it Is all about after considerable reading and sifting of the fireworks we find there Is to be a dam tor for irrigation flood control and electric power before we discuss the purpose construction financing of the dam let us turn to the history of the river both from natures and mans work nature has raised and lowered this part ot of the country several times causing it to be alternately high mountains level plains and the be bed d of the ocean when it was raised the last time there occurred an immense fault running through a point near the proposed site of the dam through arizona and the southwest corner of new mexico into mexico this faulting left the northern part several thousand feet higher than the southern part and the grand canyon probably owes a great deal of 1 its ts depth and grandeur to this faulting action nature took millions of years to do this work but she left us a river which may be used by man for many purposes the river proper is between steep sides from the boulder dam tar far up towards its head providing excellent sites for dams for power but of little use tor for irrigation to the upper states elates because the banks are so high that it would be necessary to have immense pumping 9 plants in order to raise the water from the river up to the adjoining country from the dam to near the mouth the banks gradually become lower and the current slower allowing a better chance for irrigation but less for developing power near the mouth the river has a comparatively sluggish current and the banks are so low that during high water periods the river sometimes overflows its banks and floods the surrounding country the present irrigation canal runs from a point two miles north of the mexican boundary through sixty nine miles of mexican territory back to the imperial valley there Is considerable worry and financial cost involved through the mexican officials and because of the constant danger of the high waters of the colorado river to the resident of the Imp Impre reial lal valley twenty years ago the colorado river overflowed its banks forming the salton sea and the people in the imperial valley began advocating a dam to check the river in its f flood seasons arguing that the dam would pay tor for itself through power development and irrigation after considerable diplomatic outbursts and controversies we are now ent the final stages of the problem before we discuss the final point of controversy which must be ironed before the dam can be built we should consider the purpose of the dam and means of financing purpose Is three fold I 1 domestic uses such as irrigation and drinking water 2 flood con I 1 tool 3 development of electrical power the dam itself will not benefit utah as tar far as irrigation Is concerned call cali fornia will derive the most benefit art arl 1 zone zona next and nevada very little A canal costing which will be entirely 1 in american territory Is planned to I 1 take the place of the present canal to the imperial valley the allotment of water allowed california arizona and nevada Is evidently based on the am amount tu n t of land which it would b be PI possible b is to irrigate r after the construction of the dam next in importance to irrigation is that of flood control the dam will have a capacity of storage tor for some acre feet of water which Is about two times the amount to the upper and lower basin states this would undoubtedly provide ample storage tor for controlling the flow of water down the river so as not to endanger the lives and property at the mouth of the river this flood control will greatly increase the value of the property near the mouth and in the imperial vaclev generation of electrical power Is less lees important than flood control or domestic purposes the government has allow aed ed tor for the dam for flood control and forthe I 1 power plant the power possible to de celop from a river depends upon the volume of water and the differences of elevation from point to point this dam Is to be feet high which means that there will be feet of fall of the river bed utilized by the dam 0 one ne third of this tall fall is on the nevada arizona boundary the other two thirds Is entirely in when a river runs between two states each claims one halt half of the rights to the river therefore |
