of salt lake county B H seager of 0 the detective force of the salt lake police and fred B U pike manager of 0 the me collection department of walker brothers banters we had been called as witnesses in a case ot of a man named d smith who had bought ns hites an and issued drafts without funds to pay same we arrived at reno nevada at 4 a m tuesday and two hours later took 2 a train tor for Su sanville arriving at 1130 a distance of miles north the ride over this distance was ti tiresome reome r no BO scenery except that for which nevada is noted pyramid lake was passed on the way which resembles very much dear bear lake being a large body of fresh water with no outlet on arriving at Su sanville we were informed that the case would not be tried until thursday so BO the district attorney mr james jades A nutting took us tor for a ride around the valley and over to westwood at which pl place lace is located the second largest saw mill in the states we went 1 the main part ot of the mill alao iso visited the veneer factory which mas indeed a rare rale treat we were I 1 told that at this time of the year about men are emp employed loed by the company operating the mill the large logs many ot of several tons are liand handled Aed by ma ina chilery as it if they were matches tris mill mih and the timber bolt surrounding it we aie owned by the rei redi river lumber company composed ot of eastern capital and the I 1 company controls in the town no outside business ot of any kind being allowed there most ot the men employed are foreigners and quite a number ot of women and girls work in the veneer factory all AH the products of the mill are shipped over the S P to the main line at reno nevada the town of Su sanville has a population pu lation of about andl and Is supported entirely byl byi the lumber indus azy there being two large mills there it Is a very clean city with paved streets ann and DUSI ness houses the elevation Is abo about ut the same as salt lake city and the city is situated at the toot foot of the tn cove covered rodl with ti timber in her one of the large mills mil at this place is owned by the fruit growers ot of southern california Cali tornia and manufactures all kinds hinds ot of box material oni wednesday cowan an and d pike accompanied by the tha constable went on a f fishing trip about fifty miles west and north mr cowan was successful in catching about eighteen beautiful trout some ot of which were given to friends b but ut enough kept to a restaurant and have cooked for a trout breakfast thursday morning of course the popular county clerk had several stories to tell which la Is the usual custom of fishermen thursday at 10 we went to court and were advised by the attorney that the defendant in the case had decided to plead guilty the testimony of the witnesses for the state was iwas taken however and then were excused women are subject to jury service in california and whenn we entered the court room it was filled with women ready to serve on the case but they were excused when the defendant entered his P plea of guilty at f four 0 u r in th the afternoon f we boarded the train fo tor san francisco arriving in that city city t the he next ei morning at eight it was a great sight for two of us to behold tor for the first time in ours our lives the great pacific ocean and the wonderful coast cities the trip across the bay on the terry ferry was delightful the weather being clear and cool after registering at a hotel getting breakfast etc we went to the hall ot of justice and were met by friends of mr air seager among them being the I 1 captain of police who detailed M mr r mclaughlin to get a machine and driver and take us to all the points of interest in the city which they did after going through the famous gate park we went to the top of the hill overlooking golden gate and the fleet ot of 68 battleships tle ships pass by and into the san francisco bay a sight almost be description we vere wera next taken to the top ot of twin peaks and obtained a wonderful view ot of the great city which covers am erea of 50 square miles and nearly every available piece of ground is covered with buildings the city seems to be growing rapidly many new resi inces being under construction also several large business blocks saturday morning mr cowan and myself walked down to the bay and after some difficulty obtained per mission to go ft out and visit the battleship west virginia kwas iwas anchored about a mile ti fi om shore shor anve e were taken out on a small motor kotc boat and introduced to an who detailed one 01 ol of the boys to es tort us around tho the ship neither of us hadi ever before seen a battle battleship ah I 1 if say nothing of stepping on the dec deck of one so naturally out interest w was as at a high pitch we were cordially shown over the entire ship except down in the turrets and every detail of the great sea fighter was explained to us this Is the largest and most powerfully armed battleship in the world it id ia equipped with tour four 16 inar guns several smaller ones and with two air craft guns the only ship in hi the navy at present to be so equipped also two flying machines which are sent out from froim deck by means of compressed air the ship carries 1400 men at the present time which number Is increased crea to 1500 ettien she is
