Show EXTEND THE GLAD HAND elks from over the state royally entertained monday by A jolly crowd make impromptu fun it was sure a rod letter day for the elks in park city last monday the town received the visitors with open arm arms and from the alie arrival to the deam departure ture of the special train fun I 1 un a nd and frolic were constant everybody entering into the spirit of the occasion sion resulting in a happy time and cementing as it were nvere the b ond bond of brotherhood the national flag and elks colors were much in evi evidence delice A many business houses were prettily decorated co and a loyal welcome was everywhere evident the special train arrived over the denver an and rio grande shortly after 4 p in the seventy five visitors were met at the station by a large delegation of local elks and headed by the park city military band esc escorted oried up town with purple and white umbrellas and emblematic peru pennants nants ohp the parade marched to the head of main street and counter marched to society hall amid constant cheering and enthusiasm at tile the hall the visitors were given refreshments and a jolly half hour enjoyed in merry mak i ing and rest mayor john F welsh welcomed the visitors in a neat speech turning tile the key of the city over and telling them that tile the keys of the jail were lost and the peace officers nearsighted for this occasion then the parade was reformed and to tile the strains of good music and followed by hundreds of citizens the march was taken up to tile ball grounds where a real base ball game was played between a nine of outside elks and the B P 0 E team of our city it was a live game resulting in a victory for tile the visitors principally through the partiality lity of the umpire A red ked cross wagon with a chinese mule and equipped with cross saws meat axes and su such ch was on th the a grounds and tile the wounded as well as those who ought to have been wound eu eo were caught and treated b by y sweeny westfield bob wright gihr and len mcgarry it was funny and enjoyed alike b by y t the he victims and local spectators at 8 lodge convened and tile the presentation of the famous stolen hammer gavel which was the occasion of the visit was presented to park city lod lodge lode 0 e no this emblem of authority was purloined once upon a time at detroit by ool col applegate who brought it to utah and the presentation of it to tile the dif different frent ledlaw of the state for safe keeping is made an annual event the presentation speech was made by gus henriod of eureka in a speech for forceful cibul ami pathetic and accepted by exalted ruler frank J mclaughlin in words well chosen and humorous after the meeting an belabor bai baft bairdi rii Ital was served to some of the best people on earth frank mclaughlin acted as toastmaster aster and there was surely a feast of reason and flow of soul that was vas thoroughly enjoyed at the commencement of the festivities little ada don recited what itt iti is to be an elk it was done very cleverly and applauded applaud Ld to tile the e ho bo during the banquet chas T sang a solo as did E W P westfield gave a recitation the band furnished several selections and good talks talk i were t aade by jv M d pike of eureka district deputy 0 A boyd of ogden george glenn of salt lake 11 E Mulvey first exalted ruler of salt lake lodge parley P christensen thomas thoma s homer II onier james collins A J davis and M M warner NV arner exalted ruler of salt lako lake lod lodge ellen henry welsh of park city D B Sil shields ields of salt lake aud and others jim don of this place who proposed the 11 toast it was a great day and the local elks maintained their reputation as entertainers the visitors were loudin loud in their praise at the reception and good time shown them the elks of park city appreciate tile the spirit i manifested by our aw citizens citizen siA in the welcome accorded the visitors and to the business busine s men extend thanks for tile the many neat displays of elk decorations |
