Show Bountiful Holds Hold's At Fifteen Mills Bountiful held to its mill levy of 15 THIS WAS THE levy last year a reduction of five lve mills from the 20 mills the city maintained for quite a few years City fathers fathers fa- fa lowered the five mills in two drops in recent years In opening discussion of the mill levy Mayor Morris F. F said the city should take another look at the 15 mm mill levy since the governor has asked local local lo- lo cal governments to cut taxes as asfar asfar far as possible THE CITY'S budget for July 1966 to June 1967 was set several several sev- sev eral weeks ago It was based on 15 mills It If we can live within the present present pres- pres ent 15 mill levy we should stay there the mayor saId We still have some lems For example storm sewers sewers sew sew- ers could take all the have for tor a time WE SHOULD pare the city ity down so there fuere is no fat said Councilman Layne Forbes We will have quite a bit of money from the city power plant But at the same time we needmore need needmore more study to probe the exact extent of our capital improvement improvement improve improve- ment needs Then 1 if we can see seemore seemore more money than we really need we should cut taxes still further RIght now I cant can't say whether this is the case or not MAYOR reminded council members of their desire for a new library building When you start talking about libraries and books you are talking thousands thousands thou thou- sands of dollars Bountiful is in its present firm fiscal situation because of good business practices in the past said Councilman Lloyd I Guest Money has been plowed I back into the city avoIding bonding I believe we should continue careful planning before before be- be fore making any anymore more changes in the mill levy PEOPLE IN THE city dont don't even belIeve we have cut the taxes five mills a 25 cut the mayor said Other taxes have gone up along with increased evaluations so residents have the cuts BUT THEm THEIR TAXES would have gone Just that much higher 1 if the cuts had not been made he said Councilman Forbes said he gives Councilman L L. L F F. F Eckman credit in reducing the taxes We opposed hIm quite a bit I think we can cut still more But we need further study first COUNCILMAN Eckman said he likes the mill levy as low as possible to help keep the power plant running as a business This puts pressure on the plant so it must be run well he noted The council voted to keep the present 15 mill levy |
