The couple stayed all summer and later when it got cold moved back to Salt Lake City THERE WERE several mining raining rain min ing claims worked but no one found anything to brag about I remember we had to hang onto our seat in the wagon as we went up the steep climb As there is nothing to buy there they gave us some homemade bread cooked on a griddle I canned salmon and cooked dried I apples That Was our dinner My sister and I thought it waS was great WE FINALLY CAME back to the ranch before dark but an experience we would never for for- get Those people were there for years but never found anything only a little once in a while There was a bIg spring just below the house and we had to pack water in buckets to the house but when we left the isSee isSee is- is See on page 2 Antelope Island Continued from front page pageland pageland land they put some kind of pump and pumped the water and had running water in the house THERE WAS enough rain to keep fruit trees and we had a lovely garden there It was enclosed enclosed en- en closed with a picket fence We had currants plum trees and I several apple trees In our garden garden gar gar- den we had peas radishes and potatoes One day mother sent me out outto outto to the garden fOr some peas I forgot and opened the gate and went in and didn't close it after me There were three buffaloes buffaloes buffa- buffa loes in there tied up We were trying to see if we could tame them As soon as they saw me come they ran every direction The They got loose and scared me to death I didn't pick my peas but went and told my dad they were loose in the garden He tied the them m up again THEY TRIED to tame them by tying them up when they were little and fed them out of a bucket One evening I heard the worst noise to the door and there was a buffalo in the kitchen drInking milk mUk out of the bucket When I was a little child chUd they used to come around the house and one time dad was trying to get rid of this big bigbull bull He didn't go so dad went in the house a agot ai got a shotgun and got on a horse but before he had time to shoot the buffalo turned quick and cornered cornered cor- cor the horse broke the gun and knocked my father off the horse They had to kill kUl the horse My ly lather father wasn't hurt just frightened MOTHER SAW it all happen through the window When the buffalo used to come down to the house there was a heavy fence and dad was usually around but this buffalo turned on hIm again and he just escaped through the fence Before they ever chased anyone they would roll first then they would come right after you We had a lovely patch of potatoes potatoes po- po north of the little spring Some buffalo got in the patch and took their horns and rolled the potatoes out and ate them Before Before Be- Be fore we left there they used to bother us so bad there at the house that a bIg fence was built from one end of the Island to the middle of it That kept them away from the house THERE WAS another family that moved there There were the Ferrys We always invited them to our home HIs wife had TB and they went over there on doctors doctor's orders The doctor told her she would be cured it if she went over there to live but she didn't get along very well and was expecting a baby When the baby was about three weeks old Mrs Irs Ferry died A lady from Syracuse took the baby and raised it I We were over at Lagoon at thel west end and were ready to go home and stopped to get a drink of water Dad looked up and said there was a signal on the Island We made a ire fire to answer the signal and four other ones later but by the time we got there Mrs Ferry had died It dIdn't take us long to get there only a couple of hours THEY HAD A funeral and burled buried her on the island and put puta a fence around the grave They sold their farm and were promised prom prom- I that care would be taken of I Ithe the grave There were always flowers put on it on Decoration Day But it isn't being taken care of now What do you think of the plans now of the north Up tip of the island island is- is land I THINK IT would be wonderful wonder wonder- ful but I dont don't like to see them take the land from the island company People are people it if you give them an inch they take a mile mUe One time when they had an storm just east of the the I home there was sagebrush as high as my head and every bit bitof bitof of the sagebrush was burned inthe in inthe the lightnIng fire I was 12 years old then I was surprised to see it gone later THERE WAS nice white sand sandby sandby by the water but right down in front of the ranch house it was muddy We had to go north to swi swim m. m There was a be beautiful aut if u I beach there on the east side hard as hard Dad made a little house so the ladles ladies c co o u l I d change and there was a five gallon can of clear water to wash the salt off orr afterwards There Is a wonderful road over there clear from the south southend southend end of the island up to the ranch and up to the north end It Is traveled every day I guess There were three gates when we were there that had to tobe be opened and shut when we traveled One Onetime Onetime time the school teachers went over there from here They left the gates open peeked in windows windows win win- dows and were in general very rude I was accused of letting them come I anything to do with it LATER THE Daughters of Utah Pioneers wanted to go over there but they didn't let them The teachers acted so silly they didn't want anyone else there My father and family left the island for us kids to go to school He bought a place in North Farmington THERE WERE lots of wild horses on the island and my father fa- fa ther used to catch them and bring them in and brand them One time he caught a little black horse I got a chance I would ride it I wanted to go get the cows for hIm and he said sure He would put me meon meon on the horse and I went two miles to get the cows and bring them down to the barn I would I get the dIckens when I wouldn't hold the horses horse's reins My Iy father father fa- fa ther saId the horse could have run a away with me and have stopped him Once when we came over OAf ora took this little lithe pony and made madea a real nice horse out of hini we Once when we came over on this side of Farmington they took this Utile lithe pony and made madea a real nice horse out of him we sold him and put the money inthe in inthe the bank I HAD A horse most of the time while we were over there Mother had a horse also One Onetime Onetime time they had a survey crew on onI I Fremont Island they went over there every once in a awhile we rode up to see what they were doing One Sunday we went up there right on the very top of that peak They had a big table with an umbrella over it and that was where they fed us They had a telescope th there ere and showed us people Walking in Farmington with it They were surveying for the government The mountains had cedar and maple trees o |
