state chairman introduced john D murphy as chairman of tho meeting mr murphy in taking up the gavel made a neat speech in which he scored the democrats for their uncertain policies and unenviable political record at the conclusion of chairman murphys Murp hys remarks a quartette rendered a stirring campaign song and responded to an encore when senator fairbanks was intro deuced to the audience as the next vice president of the united states it was some time before the applause which followed subsided so thac he might go on with his speech the distinguished senator prefaced his remarks on the issues of the campaign with highly complimentary remarks about ogden and her people said he 1 I am very graceful to you tor your kindly greeting it is cy first visit to ogden although I 1 have known ot the place for many years something of her growth something of her development I 1 have been struck by the indication on ever hand of the substantial growth and development of this splendid city its largest development is of comparatively recent years and it has been chiefly accod under the operation of republican policies and republican administration tho questions which engage the attention of the american people are important it was never more essential that they should be carefully decided than now for a failure to con ajder them will result in a reaction result in stopping the broial developments industrial expansion and growth I 1 am glad to be assured by your chairman that in this great contest utah proposes to stand by the administration of theodore roosevelt that she proposes to stand by his policies which Is an opportunity of the most eminent character the highest evidence of republican prosperity during the past seven and one half years is arf bound in the great commercial centers it is not to be found in the development of the great industrial evolutions of tho country great and splendid as they have been but it is to be found in the number of homes that have been erected from the atlantic to the pacific in all the splendid of the republic in the final analysis abo american home is the unit ot the republics strength that home where presides one mother where there Is gathered about the hearthstone loving hearts filled with love of the american flag and filled with admiration mi for the institutions of our fathers have to our highest and most loyal keeping this state young in years is full of splendid promise there have been coming here a splendid population of men and women they are not laggards they are men and women of courage and enterprise lovo for this state and confidence in her high and better destiny they are building up a great and prosperous community destined in gods providence to a high and still higher destiny 1 I wish that the people of wah would show their loyalty to the principles of the republican party or under their beneficent operation they will find heir highest commerce social and political development the prosperity of the people of this state dur ing the past seven and ono half years la unparalleled in the history of this commonwealth leaving this subject the senator then went on to refer about the relations of the united states with other nations of the world wo are at peace with all the nations oe the earth it is my opinion we should pursue a international policy and be on good terms with all the nations of the world the republic of the united states was never in higher esteem among the nations of the world than under the administration of theodore roosevelt senator fairbanks here stated that while he apparently during tome of his remarks seemed to have a feeling of animus against the democrats he was not directing his remarks against them but against the flat insipid principles they maintained dice sald he leads us over the precipice to our ruin if you consider all the issues of the campaign in the light ot reason and voters throughout the country do the same then roosevelt will bo the next president the questions ot irrigation tariff on wool and the cattle industry in a manner which showed him to be a master of the subjects he went on to show that roosevelt should be supported by the western states because once being a resident of the west he has an intimate knowledge of conditions which the democratic candidate has not in spite of the tact that the democrats are trying to make the claim that they are the authors of the irrigation law the fact remains that in 1901 theodore roosevelt discovered the need of irrigation in the arid western states and recommended to congress that they enact legislation to provide tor the reclamation af the arid lands senator fairbanks remarked that one bad feature had been injected into the campaign by the democrats and that an attack upon tho personal character of mr roosevelt he claimed that the very criticisms of the president wore testimonials in his favor said mr fairbanks those who criticize the action of theodore roosevelt themselves unconsciously tho speaker closed his speech with borne beautifully worded expressions as to oar position among the nations of the earth pointing to the flag he said that emblem has been raised so high that her stars are mingling with the stars of the milky way loud and prolonged cheering and the clapping of hands marked the elon of his speech after a bong by the quartette senator jonathan P dolliver Doll lver of iowa was introduced to the audience as the next speaker ha spoke in complimentary terms of the city and stated that ho wished he coald stay here for a day or two to recuperate the speaker was in a facetious mood during his entire speech and his humor evoked hearty laughter at times mr dolliver Doll lver has been in politics twenty years handled the tariff question as only one who has had much experience could handle it the question of imperialism was taken up by him and lie proved that it was nothing but a bugaboo bug a boo thai seemed to be causing tho democrats all kind of nightmares his remarks were frequently punctuated with applause senator fulton of oregon and con gressman falter R smith of iowa each made a brief stirring address on different issues of the campaign congressman smith paid a glowing tribute to the pioneers he said that he was from the county in iowa where the cormons mormons raised their first crops of grain west of the mississippi and was for that reason glad to be out among them and their descendants DAY HAS appendicitis man Being Brought here by deputy sheriff sebring falls III at st
